Fishing in Lake Alexandria ono evening last week, Mr. F. Lewis, of Timaru, was very surprised when he caught a strange looking fish of about
four pounds in weight which appeared to be a new and totally unfamiliar species of trout. The nose was sntibbcd and the bottom jaw protruded nearly two inches. The body of the fish, however, was identical with that of any trout and the phenomenon may be only a peculiar deformity. During the present holiday season traffic lias been very heavy in the Manawatu Gorge, in fact. Mr W. Brockie who is in charge of the highway, considers the amount of traffic to bo the greatest for any one holiday season within the last eight or nine years. As was to be expected, the question of slips was a “scare” to many motorists, but nevertheless, there has been an almost constant stream of traffic along the highway. Mr Brockie stated on Tuesday that general maintenance was being done at present, the kerbitig damaged by slips being renewed, and subsidences in the road being levelled.
Evidence that his sun, Alvviji Arlliui Mis sou, aged 20, an amateur wrestler, wliu died in the Aaeklaud Hospital on December JO, an Herod from boils and covered tliem with powder so that the Wrestling Association’s doctor would nut see them, was given by Arthur William M issen, at the inquest at Auckland yesterday morning. The father added that the son refused to have the boils treated by a doctor. Medical evidence showed that death was due to cellulitis of the neck and pyaemia, and that there was nothing in the post-mortem examination to show that, the neck was injured. A verdict in accordance with the medical evidence was returned.
Attracted by the deep snoring of a man behind a signboard in Adelaide road, Wellington, at 2.t!0 on Thursday morning, Constable Adlam, on investigation, found a man lying asleep, and in his possession were two bottles of methylated spirits. The offender, George Hill, alias Condon, labourer, aged -id, appeared before Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court later charged with being idle and disorderly in that he bad insufficient lawful visible means of support. It was stated that defendant when arrested had no money and was still slightly under the influence of liquor. He was convicted and discharged on condition that he returned to the unemployment camp at l’araparaumu in which he had been working up till Christmas. Indications are that the long drawnout trouble at the Waihi Hospital will very shortly be over as the result of the visit of the Minister of Health (Hon. P. Fraser) and the Director-General of Health (Dr. M. H. Watt) states a telegram from Waihi. The Minister stated after Ms conference with the Hospital Board that the conference had proved very satisfactory, and there were good grounds for believing that an arrangement would shortly be agreed to by all concerned which would ensure that the best available medical and nursing skill would be permanently at the service of the hospital and the community. In fact, the basis and general principles of the proposal had been agreed to, and the details would be worked out by Dr. Watt in conjunction with Dr. Jenkins,' Dr. Hethcrington and Dr. Barrowclough and the Hospfffal Board.
