Man Seriously Injured When Engine Explodes

ORDEAL ON BURNING LAUNCH MELBOURNE, Dec. 24. Two men were burned, one seriously, when their motor-launch caught lire in Port Phillip Bay to-day. The men leaped into the water, and kept themselves alloat with lifebelts for an hour before they -were rescued. lan Mackay, aged 30, of Auburn, was burned on the face and neck, and was admitted to hospital, Mackay and Gordon Campbell aged 24, of Williamstown, were on a holiday fishing excursion in the 30ft launch Fantasy. Six miles beyond the Gellibrand pile light the engine began to misfire. Mackay was bending over it to mako adjustments when the engine exploded and tho flames burned him. Campbell endeavoured to stop tho flames from reaching the petrol tank, but when he realised that ho could not, the two men donned lifebelts and jumped into the sea, just before tin launch was destroyed. The salt water on Mackay’s burns caused-him- intense pain.> The-two men were rescued eventually by 'tho -crew of the Harbour Trust hopper barge, William Strong. Both were treated for burns.
