Making a Tent Last Twice As Long

PLANT RESEARCH STATION EXPERIMENTS.

Investigations that promise to double the length, of life of a canvas tent are at present being carried out by the Palmerston North Plant Research Station. The ofiicor in charge of tho research is Mr J. C. Neill, who explained to Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister in charge of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, yesterday, that mould growths caused the rotting of the materia], but by painting the canvas with a certain preparation, the growth of the mould were retarded. At the moment he had a lot of tents so treated in use in Public Works camps.

The Minister: But what has all this to do with plant research? Mr Neill: This is one of my side lines. I am very interested in moulds.

Mr Neill then told the Minister something of the investigations he had conducted in preventing tho growth of moulds in butter boxes.

As.tho Public Works Department has thousands of pounds invested in canvas tents, the valuo of the research to the country generally can bo gauged. “Have you any solution to treat mouldy politicians?” Mr Nciu was facetiously asked. The Minister: That doesn’t apply here as there arc only statesmen present. (Laughter).
