Gay Deceivers Turn Pretence Into Romance

FRANCIS LEDERER, FRANCES DEE TEAMED IN COMEDY ROMANCE

(State: Screening To-day.)

The boy was unbelievably rich,

handsome and a royal prince, yet ho protended to be nobody. The girt was young and lovely, enjoying a mad, merry fling at life with her

last five thousand—and her first, and then they met!

There, in a nutshell, is the delicious, mirth-provoking situation in which Fox Film’s “Tho Gay Deception” places its romantic stars, Francis Lederer and Frances Dee.

It all starts when Miss Dee, a sweet young secretary who has longed all her life to be in the whirl of gay life, wins a sweepstake prize and decides to spend it on one delirious spree of pleasure. She hies herself to . New York and to its ritziest hotel. And, even though she is mistaken for an heiress, she fails to find the colourful life she had anticipated.

There are even annoyances, one annoyance in particular. He is a bellboy who criticises her hats and clothes and tells her how lovely she is. And just as often as she has him fired she finds him back again, until she finally begins to take an interest in the handsome young scapegrace.

She has no way of knowing that he is a prince in disguise, not even when he turns up in all his royal regalia and accompanies her to the season’s gala ball. And when, through some curious misunderstanding, he is arrested as an imposter, the girl finds herself fighting for his release becauso she is in love with him.

Through one brilliant high comedy scene after another, “The Gay Deception” moves to its close and Miss Dee admits that she' does love Lederer, even if he is a prince and not the poor boy she hoped he was. :Produced by Jesse Lasky and directed by William Wyler, “The Gay Deception” features Alan Mowbray, Benita Hume, Akim Tamiroff and Lennox Pawle in its supporting cast.
