The Oxley Cup Challenge

UNUSUAL RESULT The Pahiatua Bowling Club sent two rinks to Eketahuna on Wednesday in quest of the Oxley Cup, and the match had an. unusual result, scores, games and heads being on terms. Under the conditions of the cup another head should have been played to decide possession of the trophy, but the bowlers were unaware of this at the time, and Eketahuna had retained the trophy as they had not been beaten. It is on record that a similar case took place on the Pahiatua green some years ago, when Dr. Mules had to play off as skip, of the winning Woodville rink. Walker's rink did not begin too well and' were" six down soon after the start," After a while they found the run j*f r the green, and when twenty heads had been played the board read 19-all. • On the final’ head Simpson’s jinV were one up, and they] thus took the game 20-19. Early in the day long heads were put .down by the cup holders, and the Pahiatua men were unable to find the green owing to their being used to a fastlgreen at home. Hodd’s rink was behind for the first twelve heads, when the board read 174, and at this juncture the Pahiatua men had a change of fortune. At the .twenty-first head they were three down on the. head, and the Pahiatua skipper killed. A further head was played, and .Pahiatua were lying three when the-skip went down and drew one to take the game. The teams were: — Pahiatua Wo. 1; Murphy, Chatwin, E. Lett and Walker (skip) 19, lost to Eketahuna No. 1: Taylor, Anderson, Frederiekson and Simpson (skip) 20. Pahiatua No. 2: Mills, Carrad, Pilkinton and Hodd .(skip) 22, defeated
