Victory for Palmerston North Boys’ High School

WELLINGTON BOYS’ ASSOCIATION BEATEN BY 103 RUNS

In a one-day match played yesterday on the High School ground, the High School cloven defeated tho Wellington Boys’ Association team by 103 runs, tho game being restricted to one innings each. The -weather -was delightfully fine and warm and the, wicket was playing well. Batting first, tho visitors knocked up 135, and High School passed tins total with six wickets still in hand. The game, however, was much more interesting than the scores -would indicate, for Wellington’s earlier batsmen shaped so well that the prospects were that School -would have to face a big total -when it came to its turn to bat. With 78 runs on and only one wicket down, tho visitors’ chances of knocking up a good total were rosy. However, the School bowlers then began to get command and after the score had reached 116 they took complete charge, the batsmen being dismissed in quick succession. . School’s opening batsmen soon settled down to the task of getting runs, and it was early made apparent that tho visitors were up against it./

Tho umpires were Messrs A. MeVicar and P. Hubbard and the game was witnessed by a number of interested spectators.

Wellington had first use of the wicket, and after losing one man for no score, Archer and Stevens rattled the runs on at a very hard pace, the total being raised to 78 before Stevens put one into Cameron’s hands in the slips. Then Rogers joined Archer and the scoring rate was maintained. Tho hundred went up and when the total was 116 Archer, who had contributed 60, including nine fours, hit ono into Hcarsey’s hands at square leg. This was the beginning of the end, and the innings closed with a rattle for 135, the last seven wickets adding only 19 runs. Ilearsey, Stewart and Downes shared tho bowling honours, and to show tho pace of tho ’scoring the innings lasted only 105 minutes. Ilearsey and Gatley against some likely-looking bowlers gave High School a good start, 60 being signalled before Ilearsey\ cocked ono into ltdgers’ hands, 'Sogers being close in on’ the on side.

Young joined. Gatley at tho crease, and after McCarthy and Rogers had kept them quiet for some time, the runs again began to come, the hundred going up after 90 minutes. The score was .114 at tho tea adjournment, Gatley being 49 and Young 25. t The adjournment proved fatal to Young, who failed to get going again. Gatley also went fairly soon, being run out. lie had batted very well and Iris 62 was made without a chance being given. He hit four fours. • The remaining batsmen went for the runs and the total had been raised to 235—103 runs ahead —before the innings closed.
