Paddy’s Market Realises Over £loo

SPLENDID EFFORT FOR GUIDES AND SCOUTS Tho “Paddy’s market” admirably organised by the Guido, Scout, Ranger and Rover companies of the district, and held in the Empire hall on Saturday last, met with gratifying success. Much energy and enthusiasm had been displayed by tho various committees and all concerned must have felt somewhat compensated by the result of their efforts, -which realised over £IOO. The stalls were arranged on either side of the hall in truo market fashion and provided an infinite variety of attraction. There was an excellent attendance of the public throughout the afternoon and evening, and much friendly rivalry among tho vendors. At two o’clock tho Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs A. E. Mansford) were welcomed at the door by tho District Commissioner of Guides, Mrs G. A. Eliott; Rev. A. N. Scotter, chairman of St. Paul’s company, and Mr H. G. Mills, chairman of To Awe Awe Scout Committee, and escorted to tho platform, a guard of honour being formed by all' the Guides;, Rangers, B’rownies, Scouts, Rovers and Cubs with their respective leaders. Also on the platform were District Scout Commissioner Mr N. D. Stubbs and Mrs Stubbs (who were unavoidably delayed), Mr A. Grigor, treasurer of the Manawatu Scout Association, and Mr G. Beck (Terraco End troop committee). Mr Mansford, who was introduced by Mrs Eliott, took the opportunity of publicly thanking the Guides and Scouts as Mayor of the city for their great co-operation and assistance rendered at all times in connection with rolief, and for tho support accorded public functions and receptions, which lie appreciated greatly. Tracing the development of scouting and guiding, tho Mayor said it was one of the finest movements for young people, deserving of tho support of all rightthinking men and women. The lessons learned and experience gained would stand the boys and girls in goo’d stead all their lives. Mr Mansford referred to the fact that in 1900 the average number of persons saved from drowning by Scouts for six months was five a week. That was a wonderful record. Tho high ideal's of tho movement were to bo admired and encouraged, and if the boys and girls fulfilled their obligations as Scouts and Guides they would grow up as citizens commanding the respect of their , fellow-men. Mr Mansford commended tho industry of tho various troops and companies, and in declaring tho function open hoped their efforts would be crowned with success.

Mr Mills returned thanks to the Mayor and explained that the Paddy’s market had been organised to raise funds for the various committees to further the movement. On the call of Mr Stubbs cheers were given for the Mayor and Mayoress. Bouquets were presented to Mrs Hansford and Mrs Eliott.

Apologies were offered on behalf- oj, Mr B. J. Jacobs, chairman of the executive; Colonel J. H. Whyte, chairman of the Manawatu Scout Association.

Business was brisk at tho various stalls and there were numerous competitions, bran tubs, etc., to add to the interest.

Tho refreshment room whs under the control of tho guide executive and ladies’ committee of tho Scout Association, Mrs P. Bennett being in charge. Tugs-of-war provided tho greatest excitement, the afternoon’s contest organised. by Mrs Chattield being between Brownies and Cubs, with the fatter carrying off the honours. In the evening eight teams from various Scout troops wore matched, Northern beating West End in the semi-final and All Saints' beating Central, Northern gaining the final honours in a vory close contest. Teams of guides were also matched, the serni-finalists being first and second company and fifth and sixth. In the final, sixth company won from second company.
