The Manawatu Daily Times MONDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1935. “Made in New Zealand”

There has just been put upon the market a “Made in New Zealand’’ shearing machine. The lincst milking machines in the world have been originated, developed and manufactured in this country and there is every good reason why our mechanics should be able to produce an equally good shearing machine. Provided the quality is given and the price is reasonable, this new product should prove successful.

Month by month, especially during the past two years, new manufactures have been started in the Dominion, the gieat majority commenced in a modest fashion. It is thus that most successful concerns have originated in all countries.

During the past twelve months the people as a whole, of this Dominion have become more industrially minded. A feature of the present election campaign is that almost without exception every candidate for Parliamentary honours is putting the development of secondary industries as a foremost plank in his platform.

It has become a recognised fact that only by the development of industries can a prosperous and balanced state be built up. This public recognition is of considerable importance because the spirit of a nation largely determines its evolution. A few months ago there was held in Britain the. first oneman show” of an industrial designer. Exhibits in pottery, glass and silverware were shown. The president of the Ivoyal Academy, Sir William Llewellyn, paid a tribtuc to Mr. Keith Murray, a New Zealander, whose exhibit this *was. The president’s comment was: “He•has made a very significant contribution to industrial design in Britain. We were losing ground to France, Germany and Czechoslovakia, and we needed somebody from the Antipodes to Avake things up.”

Unquestionably we have the talent amongst our people for manufacture. It only aAvaits the opportunity to prove itself.
