The Executive Commission Of Agriculture

As a great deal of political capital is being mado of the powers of tho Commission by some Parliamentary candidates it is as well that the true position should be made clear.

“Tho powers of tho commission are certainly wide, but they can bo exercised only by means of regulations mado under the authority of tho Agriculture (Emergency Powers) Act, 1934. These regulations must be approved by the Governor-General iu Council, and must subsequently bo laid before Parliament for confirmation. It is surely idle. to suppose that tho commission would ask Cabinet for coercive powers that Parliament would be unlikely to confirm.”
