Promises and Borrowing

EIGHT-THINKING WILL NOT APPROVE A spirited criticism of what he described as the "promise” policy of tho Democrat; and Labour Parties was made by Hon. J. G. Cobbe speaking at if tanway last night. "Tho speeches of members of tho three parties in tho election campaign have revealed very clearly to the electors throughout New Zealand the souuduess and saneness of tlic policy of the National Government,” remarked Mr. Cobbe. "The Government,” continued the .Minister, ‘ ‘ does not make promises for big or little things unless it is sure those promises can be carried out. It knows the resources of the Exchequer and it knows very well that the promises made by both tho Democrat aud Labour Parties could uot be ever given effect to.

"You will find in the utterances of Democrat candidates that they rise to great flights of oratory in condemning past borrowing of tho State, but what does their policy of promises mean? It means further borrowing. Sureiy the country can see through the veil of the party's scheme of things. "Then tho Labour Party is playing tho sarno tune. That party, too, wants to spend the country’s money in the same lavish way—iu a way in which no right-thinkiug man would approve. But the nard headed farmer or city man can discern the nigger in the woodpile of their promises, and in that I am satisfied,” he concluded.
