The Palmerston North Fire Brigade were called to the Royal Hotel, in Raneltikci .street, at 10.30 o’clock yesterday morning but on arrival it 'veas found that the services of the tirofighters were not required. ‘‘When you are our member next Wednesday will we still be able to call you Joe or will we have to say Mr. Hudgens*” asked an elector of Mr. .1 Hodgcus at his Opera House meeting last evening. Mr. Hodgcns: “I have met defeat many a time with a smile on my face and I’ll take victory with a grin but still be plain Joe” (applause). A young man appeared before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate s Court yesterday on a charge of doing minor damage to two cars while drunk in Coleman place at 12.15 a.m. yesterday. The offence was described as a drunken prank, but a senselesssort of mischief. Accused was lined 3s for drunkenness and £2 on each ol the two charges relating to the cars, being ordered jto make good the damage. Caught by a premature fall of papa at the Public Works job at Ivakariki late on Wednesday afternoon, Harry Keystone, a married man, residing at Marlon, sustained n fractured leg aud other injuries. Other workmen nearby just escaped. Keystone was buried almost up to the shoulders aud tlic men had to work frantically to release him. He was in terrible pain. Ho was carried on a stretcher to the Greatford Station and attended to there by .Dr. Watson, of Bulls, being later removed to hospital.
