Foxton

From Our Own Correspondent. Drainage Board Affairs.

Trustee) J. Chryatall (chairman) presided over tho monthly mooting of tho Moutoa Drainago Board held at Foxton. Also present were Trustees W. 10. Barber, F. Woods, D. Purcell and the clerk and treasurer (Mr G. V. Fraser). An apology for absence was received from Mr Herman Seifert. . , The treasurer, in referring to the board's ilnancial position, stated that tho bank account that day was overdrawn to the extent of £IOG 8s 7d. Tho balances of tho main ledger accounts were: General account, in debit, £l9O 11s 3d; interest accounts, in credit, £Bl 2s Bd. Accounts amounting to £lO4 2s Id were presented for payment and of this amount the sum of £450 Is Id had already boen paid out and was included in tho balances shown above. „ . Tho foreman (Mr T. A. Robinson) in reporting on tho work carried out since the last meeting, stated that the task of removing slips from Smith's drain had been completed. Alt slips from the upper section of Carter's drain had been removed and in addition the water grass in this drain had beep cut and dragged for, a distance of 10 chains prior to the last flood. A considerable amount of work had been done at both sets of floodgates during the flood when much timber and debris had to ho dealt with. The work of removing willow troes front. the . main iiighway alongside the Main drain for a distance of 20 chains, occupied the foreman and an employee of the Manawatu County Council the whole of one night. The work, however, prevented a serious blockage at both tho road bridge and the main floodgates. Both approaches to the diagonal drain floodgates scoured out again during tho flood but owing to preventive measures having been taken the scour was only three foot deop. This damage had since been repaired however and tho approaches again made safe. Work was proceeding with the cutting and dragging of water grass from the upper section of 'Wall's outlet and would be linisbed within a few days, when, conditions being suitablo, a start would be made witli tho cleaning of the upper section of Langlej’'s north drain and the Mile drain, both of which wero carrying a heavy growth of swangrass. Mr F. S. Easton wrote complaining of tho state of Langley's north and the Mile drains and asking that these drains be cleuned at the earliest opportunity. It was decided to advise Mr Easton that work, which had been held up by continuous floods, would be proceeded with as soon as possible.
