Gambling and Betting Mania
METHODISTS DEPLORE INCREASING PREVALENCE Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Last Night. At the annual synod of the OtiigoSoutliland district of the Alctkodist Church to-day, tho Public Questions Committee submitted the following finding:— “In view of the widespread and increasing prevalence of the gambling and betting mania aud tho insidious evils attendant upon such, the synod’s counsel asks the people of the Alethodist Church to abstain from participation iu any fonu of gambling and to do all in their power to lessen its-sway in tho community. Wo further urge that instruction in the evils of gambling be given by youth workers of the eflureh. ”
The chairman said that although tho proceeds of art unions wero devoted to the relief of distress, tho whole system was pernicious. If tho interests of tho needy were to be studied, why give largo sums.in prizes. Why not give straight outf Tho finding was approved.
