Improving Future Shows

SUGGESTIONS CONSIDERED BY A. AND P. ASSOCIATION Mainly to consider suggestions for future shows arising out of the recent jubilee, fixture, a meeting of the general committee of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association was held yesterday, Mr J. Batcheiar presiding over an attendance of about 25. Congratulations on the excellence of the show were voiced in a letter from Mr D. L. Smith, of Hamilton. He mentioned that he had seen tho association's first show in 1880 and was pleased at tho progress made. Arising out of a complaint that the steer-riding competition had not been staged at the scheduled time, it was decided that such events at future shows should bo hold not later than 2 o’clock. In congratulating the association on the recent fixture, Mr H. N. Watson, of Palmerston North, suggested that the hunters’leaping competition should be staged at 3 p.m. He pointed out that, beforo the war, this competition was so attractive that it was difficult to get a seat in the stand except by taking it early. Mr Watson further suggested the metalling of the paths to tho cattle pavilion. Members of the committee were agreed that something should be done in regard to the paths to the cattle pavilion, it being pointed out that visitors at the recent show had to tramp through mud. It was decided to refer the matter to tho grounds committee and to thank Mr Watson for this and other suggestions, which are to receive consideration. A vote on a suggestion by Dr. E. C. Barnett that the grand parade of stock should be hol'd at 2.30 p.m., saw tho committee decide to adhere to the present time—2 o’clock. In a general discussion on the layout of the sideshows, it was pointed out that some had been allowed to encroach on the metalled pathways, which wero designed for the convenience of the public. The suggestion was advanced by Mr F. Jackson that the sideshows should bo arranged tho form of a' circle. Tho matters raised are to bo given further consideration.

Mr. J. A. Russell stated that stock had been removed from the pavilions too early after the grand parade, and the public had no opportunity of inspecting the animals. The rule that stock should remain on the grounds until 4 pan. should bo enforced. More prominence for tho fat lamb section, by housing it in the sheep pavilion, was urged by Mr L. B. Wall. The matter was left in the hands of tho sheep schedule committee.

The suggestion having been advanced that the fat sheep and fat cattle sections at both shows should be cut out because of breeders.not giving them sufficient support, it was decided to ascertain what support will be given in future.

Tho committee passed a resolution expressing appreciation of tho action of Sir William Perry (Masterton) in donating back to tho association the Mitchell cup, which ho had won at the spring show.

A vote of thanks is to be forwarded to tho principal of Massoy College and the rector of tho Palmerston North Boys' High School for assistance given by students of those institutions.

Tho Department of Agriculture, Massey College, and tho Manawatu Pig Recording Club are to be thanked for tho comprehensive display staged by them. Improvements to tho surfaco of tho oval in tho direction of levelling irregular patches and grassing baro spots were suggested by Mr J J. Stevenson at an estimated cost of £2O.

The seerotary (Mr H. E. Kissling) inquired whether tho oval could over bo made fit for cricket.

Members pointed out that tho provision of a lirst-elass playing area would bo dependent ou lho support given by sporting bodies. Mr Stevenson’s suggestions wero agreed to, the work to be put in hand immediately.

In regard to the speedway,, it was decided that the matter should bo gono into at tho next meeting.

Votes of thanks for assistance in connection with the stock sections wero accorded Messrs E. Shand ' and Drysdale. Messrs D. W. Low, T. F. Fairbrother, J. GalJand and 11. Lyall are to be thanked for their work in regard

Tho suggestion was made by Mr .u H. Coliinson that tho band rotunda might bo moved to a more central position on the grounds, and this matter was .referred to tho grounds committee.

Arising out of a recommendation by the Jinauco committee, it was decided that winners of .challenge trophies should be allowed to take them away and hold them until a month prior to the next, show, provided that the trophies are insured.
