Anglican Clergy and Politics

BISHOP PITCHETT’S APPEAL Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Out. 21. An interesting pronouncement on the subject of the Anglican clergy and the forthcoming general election was made by Bishop F'itchett in his presidental address to Diocesan Synod to-day. “Shortly we shall be in the midst of a general election in which various political parties will be contending for supremacy,” he said. “I hold very strongly that the clergy, whose duty it is to minister without discrimination to parishioners who hold varying political views, should hold themselves aloof from party politics and particularly is this desirable during the excitement of a general election when partisanship is at fever heat. It' is my hope that the clergy of this Dioccr- will abstain from talcing any- public part in political meetings and will not express their political views otherwise than by means of the ballot box.”
