That tho local rifle club is a very popular body was proven on Wednesday last when a large crowd patronised their euchre and dance. Air 1. Sutherland was II.C. Tho programme consisted of old time and modern dancing and every effort was made to extend hospitality to the visiting patrena. Tho card room'was also popular. During the supper adjournment tho patron, Mr A. Henson, thanked the patrons for their attendance and also the ladles, who were members of the A wall uri Women’s Institute, for tho supper arrangements, and the expeditious manner in which their duties were discharged. The prizes won during the year were then presented as follows: Aggregate (maximum points 16S0), Mr T. Cribb, with 1654 points (average 337 5-6) 1; Air J. Craig 1650 (av. 1371) 2. Special Shatter trophy for most consecutive bulls, Air J. Craig, 24 bulls; Ho. 2 handicap trophy, Air K. Matthews 1, Mr H. Alatthews 2. Cups and saucers numbering 70 were distributed to the various winners in their respective grades, many receiving tho limit of six. iWmicrs of the card tourney were: Ladies, Mrs J. Lucas 1, Airs Kirk (Palmerston North) 2; men, Air J. Cribb 1, Airs A. Karipa 2. Novelty dance winners were: Lucky spot, Allss Ai. Kirk and Mr A. Karipa; Monte Carlo, Aliss Evonne Dennett and Air T. Staples. The inlaid tray competition was won by Air Bruce Clark (Palmerston North). The function was very successful and the club will bei’.elit substantially. Mr It. Hell, who gave a xylophone solo to the accompaniment of a gramophone, had to respond to an encore. A professional band supplied beautiful music. School Euchre.

The popular school card tourneys was held last Thursday night and resulted as follows: Highest score, Mr J. Cribb 1, Air J. Ward 2, All's W. Ward annexing the ladies’ prize. Old Pupils’ Association.

The euchre and dance promoted by the above association to be held tyi Wednesday night, October 25, promises to be a very popular turn-out 'and enthusiasts are assured of a good night’s entertainment. Tho old pupils' functions are wellknown and no effort will be spared to cater for patrons. A Palmerston North popular dance orchestra will be in attendance while good prizes will be issued. A meeting of the above committee was held in the Kai Iwi meeting liou.se on Monday night, October 14, when Air T. Meßoyal presided over a good attendance. Olliers outside the committee were invited to discuss a certain matter which if left alone would provoke an ill-feeling among the people and the committee. The question at issue was a test as to the powers of the committee in controlling the work necessary for the improvements of the pa and it was considered opportune that the matter should be discussed in its early stages. It is necessary to recall the past functionings of the committee, which was elected by the people to undertake tho task of rehabilitating the old Kauwhata meeting house and improve its surroundings. Before the com-mit-tee was formed it was thought that the raising of funds to carry out the scheme be in the nature of taxation of the Kauwhata tribe and its hapus (subtribes) but that fell through, and as a consesuenco the committee was elected. The committee undertook the work with much enthusiasm and after a period of three years, sufficient money was raised to carry out the work. Now that all the necessary work is completed the committee is asked to limit its powers within a certain area of the marac, that is, within tho fence immediately surrounding the meeting house. To this the committee was loath to agree, hence the trouble. Tho committee contends, however, that its powers of administration were vested by the trustees of the pa, who were duly elected and confirmed by tho Native Land Court. The area under the trusteeship was two acres. • Long and loud was tho discussion which terminated towards midnight, and a resolution on an amicable basis was passed, namely, that an investigation of tho land title with a view to applying to the court for a recti'
