Splendid Abyssinian Morale
A MILLION AWAITING TO ADVANCE
Received Friday, 1.35 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 17. The British United Press correspondent at Harrar says that Dr. Robert Hockman, head of the American Hospital at Addis Ababa, declares the Italians are using chlorine gas bombs. He has just returned from Abyssinian headquarters at Jijiga, where he established a field hospital. Dr. Hockman confirmed the reports that the Abyssinians were wounded by explosive bullets. He added that the field hospital treated thousands of victims of bombing and machinegunning and also scurvy which had broken out owing to the shortage of fresh foods. Dr. Hockman considers the morale of the Abyssinians excellent. They are most anxious to commence large-scale operations. Nearly a million are concentrated on the Ogaden front and are so distributed as to be invisible from the air. The; country behind the line looks almost deserted. Dr. Hockman is proceeding to Addis Ababa for an antidote for chlorine poisoning.
