MANY TOP-LINERS FALL BY THE WAYSIDE The first and second rounds of the amateur championships were full of surprises for among the top-liners who were eliminated were A. D. S. Duncan, B. V. Wright, E. M. Macfarlane, T. H. Horton, li. A. Black, A. G. Sime and J. P. Mortland and it is worthy of note that of the seven players engaged who have held tho amateur title, only one, Silk, survived the second round. The third round of tho amateur championship will be played over 18 holes this morning. Silk, tho titleholder, meeting Moore; Ferguson—John Galloway; J. R, Smith—J. L. Black; and Hobbs—Hornabrook. Failure to reveal true form iu the qualifying rounds and the automatic draw are responsible for the fact that so many of the more fancied candidates were against each other so early in the championship, but in accounting for Horton J. L. Black recorded a round equai to a 67, which would have been hard for anyone to play against. Last year’s runner-up for the title, Mortland, accounted for Sime in the first round but he failed to hold the brilliant Masterton “youngster,” Hornabrook, who beat him by a 7 and 6 margin. Russell Hobbs, of Napier, got through a very useful day's work by eliminating Hutchison, of Wanganui, and Harold Black, who won the title when the championships were last played at Hokowhitu Hobbs distinguished himself in the open by sandwiching a priceless round of 88 among three very ' good cards. THE PROFESSIONAL TITLE J, E. first round was tho popular man from Otago, Douglas, who was eliminated by “Jock” Galloway in a game which finished on tho homo green Douglas was runner-up to Shaw in this event last year and the final, over 36 holes, ended on the thirthy-sixth green where Douglas, who had been in a winning position a few holes from home, missed a very short putt which would have kept the game alive Douglas was equal fourth in tho open and ho would have been closer to tho winner but for an 8 at tho fourteenth (452 yards) in his third round, Douglas averaging 4’s for the other three Jock Galloway gavo an indication of his best form in the foursomes championship, in which ho and his son, Tom, were only a stroke away from tho winners, Murray and Mclntosh, but he had had little if any serious practice before he left for Christchurch, and it was pleasing to hear he had survived the first round, despite the fact that he was meeting one of the most consistently good, men in New Zealand. In the afternoon he went on with the good work by defeating Mclntosh. The semi-finals will bo played to-day over 36 holes, Murray, tlm open champion, meeting Fuller, and Galloway— Shaw, Shaw being the title-holder.

THE OPEN CHAMPION,

Prior to this year’s open Alec Murray had gained prominence in the only two Now Zealand tournaments in which he has taken part by the fact that lio won the long driving contest each time. His second success was at Wanganui last year, when he would have won the long-hitting aggregate, too, only for one ball being just out of bounds. Murray came from Scotland, where he was born in 1911, with the veteran professional E. S. Douglas, and was his assistant as a boy at Titirangi. 110 went to Balmacewan with Douglas, and later had a short period as an assistant “pro.” in Sydney. Returning to Auckland in 1931 he was attached to a sports depot as a coach. Ho has cloven uncles who arc professionals, his mother has been a scratch golfer for 3d years, and his father is professional to a small club in Scotland. Prior to leaving Auckland Murray drew attention to his chances by some sterling rounds at Glcndowie and Titirangi. At tho latter courso he had a round of 69, which was more meritorious than breaking 70 at Glendowie, which he did. Tho victory of the comparatively unknown young Aucklander gave the spectators a thrill. Murray received no heartier congratulations than those of E. S. Douglas, the Otago professional, who brought him out from Scotland in 1928. PREVIOUS WINNERS. A. J. Shaw won the New Zealand open title on six occasions. E. S. Douglas, another professional, was successful on four occasions, w’hile E. J. Moss and J. A. Clements, professionals, and A. D. S. Duncan, amateur, won it three times each. List of winners:— Year. Miss Jacqueline Gordon, aged 16, a London girl, of Stanmore, Middlesex, playing in tho girls’ golf championship at Stoke Poges on September 5, accomplished one of the rarest feats in the game—a 2 at a bogey 5 hole. Miss Gordon’s achievement was at tlie sixth, a hole of 40S yards, with a bo-ey of 5. Following her drive she holed a full spoon shot of 200 yards. \n cquallv surprising shot was accomplished by Bobby Jones in tho amateur championship at St. Andrew’s in 1930. Having driven into a bunker at the fourth (427 yards), he holed a full Tsfo. 4 iron sliot tor n 2, British Pair Win Women’s Foursomes Championship WELLINGTON, Last Night.
