Lorry Careers Over Forty Feet Bank
OCCUPANTS’ NARROW ESCAPE.
The two occupants of a lorry laid a miraculous escape from serious injury on Tuesday, when the vehicle dived down a 40ft. bank at the Woodvilio end of file Manawatu Gorge. The driver of tho lorry was Air. J. E. Hope, orchardist, of Hastings, who had a passenger iu the front scat. The vehicle was travelling toward Woodville with a load of 14 drums of petrol when, at tbe Woodvilio cemetery, it collided with a car driven by Air. William AlcLean, lorry-driver, of AVellington. The car was coming from the cemetery and was turning toward Palmerston North when tho accident occurred. The front portion of the car was damaged badly. The lorry ploughed through the fence and careered down the bank. The vehicle did not overturn, but the drums crashed through the cab, which was wrecked. The front part of the lorry was buried in the bottom of the bank and was also badly damaged. Neither occupant was badly hurt.
