Price of Butter
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Would you please answer through your columns the following questions which are of vital interest to housewives and wage-earners:— (.1) Why has Hie retail price of butter been increased? (2) Who authorises the shopkeepers lo make the increase? (3) Who gets the benefit of the increased rate? (4) Is there a scarcity of butter in New Zealand? (5) How- can a rising price bo justified without a corresponding increase in spending power? I am, etc., “PERPLEXED.”
“Observer” replies as follows: — (1) The value of butter has increased substantially on the w’orld market. (2) The shopkeepers have to pay higher prices for the butter and hence must charge more. (3) The benefit of the higher price is obtained in full by tho dairyfarmers. (4) There is no scarcity of butter in New Zealand. (5) This quesliou is one of political economy. Iu reply to the other four wc have but given facts and not stated opinions.
