On Monday evening Mr J. K. Hornblow, continuing his electioneering campaign, addressed a meeting of tho electors in the local nail when ho explained the reasons for his candidature. Mr A. Hobbs in introducing the speaker, said that Mr Hornblow was one whose efforts on the Wanganui Education Board and on tho Hospital Board were appreciated by all. , , , During Mr Hornblow s address he criticised tho exchange which, he said, was grossly unfair to the people at Home who took approximately nine-tenths of the Dominion's produce. He said that much money had been wasted, instancing the erection of a £50,000 hostel at a Wanganui schooi for sixteen hoarders and the deviation at Palmerston North. He considered that tho railway through tho city provided its best advertisement for people from other parts could see liow well tho city was laid out. Concerning the afforestation of sand-dunes, the speaker said that this work was of national importance which in time would prove a valuable asset to the country. One council should control the roads from the Gorge to the Manawatu Heads, ■ lie added, while there should be in each island, a body controlling all the arterial roads. Beplying to a question Mr Hornblow said that lie would support any legislation brought down by any party which he considered was benelicial to tho Dominion. A vote of thanks to the speaker and to tho chair concluded the meeting. Golf. Over tho week-end the local golf club held its closing day when visitors were present from neighbouring clubs. Though the weather was cool and windy in the morning, conditions improved in the afternoon when play was quite pleasant. Several competitions were indulged in during the morning and tho following were tho winners of tho various competitions: Ladies' novelty putt, Miss J. Oyston; men’s novelty putt', 11. Stern; ladies’ bunker shot, Miss Wanlilyn; men’s hunker shot, B. Pedersen; ladies’ long drive. Miss N. Easton; men’s long drive, M, Moffat: ladies’ approach and putt, Miss Wanklyn: men’s apxiroach and putt, M. Moffat. M. Moffat’s drive was approximately 260 yards. In tho afternoon players were engaged in a Canadian mixed foursome while the remainder of the men played a medal round which was won by 11. Mead. Three

pairs lied for tho mixed foursome which resulted in a win for H. Mabey and Miss N. Easton. At tho conclusion of play, afternoon tea was served after which Mr J. Connell thanked the visitors for helping to make the day a success. He then called upon Mrs E. Conlan (wife of tho president) to present tho trophies. The following are the winners of trophies during the season: Ladies’ aggregate, Mrs A. T. Nichols; men’s aggregate, R. Sliailer; ladies’ eclectic, Miss L . Fromm; men’s eclectic, R. A. Nichols.
