MEETING OF THE COUNCIL
Tho Kiwitea County Council met at Kimbolton yesterday, Cr. L. T. McLean (chairman) presiding. There wmre also present Crs. AV. P. Shaw, J. A. T. Brown, D. T. Couper, AV. G. Clapham, J. Beard, E. E. Tappin, J. A. AVilliamson and AV. Hair, Correspondence The following correspondence was dealt with: — Prom tho Public AVorks Department, advising payment of subsidy on maintenance of main highways for the period 8/4/35 to S/6/35, amounting to £231 6s 2d.—Received. Prom the Kairanga County Council, forwarding £2Ol 9s Id, being- .this council’s share of the ,hcavy-traffic license fees collected for tho quarter ended 31/S/35. —Received. Erom tho Prime Minister, acknowledging receipt of copy of resolution passed by this council regarding payment of a £1 for £1 subsidy on roads other than highways, and advising that it is not intended to introduce legislation altering the present basis of subsidy on. rates, pursuant to section 9 of tho Appropriation Act, 1916, The writer further advised that, as announced in tho Budget, a subsidy of 12i per cent, is to be paid on county rates this year, and authorising legislation will be introduced for the purpose. . Letters on the same subject wero also received from tho Minister of Finance and Hon. J. G. Cobbc, member for Oroua. —Received. Erom tho hon. organiser, Health Stamp campaign, 1935-36, thanking the council for setting aside tho sum of £5 for the purchase of health stamps. —Received. From Mr A. E. London, requesting permission to erect a gate across tho old river road at London’s Ford bridge, for the purpose of controlling stoek using that route.—Approved subject to the usual conditions. From Mr F. Bonnor, Rangiwahia, drawing the council’s attention to the large number of cattle wandering on the Upper Kawhatau roads.—Referred to the ranger with instructions to prosecute. From Mr Stan Waugh, requesting permission to erect a sign above the footpath in front of his garage, Kimbolton.—Approved subject to the usual conditions. From Mr AV. D. Marshall, hon, secretary of the Dunnoliy "School Committee, requesting tho council to make a turning place for cars at the school gate.—Agreed to. Treasurer’s Report Tho treasurer reported on the county finances as follows: —County fund account (dr.), £3353 8s 2d; employees’ accommodation loan account
(cr.), £26 9s lid; do., fixed deposit, £100; Kimbolton cemetery account (cr.), £l2 11s lOd; land fund account (cr.), £227 12s sd; Rangiwahia cemetery account (cr.), £lO 11s 9d; AA’aiiuna cemetery account .(cr.), £2 7s Id.
Rate Position The treasurer reported on tho rate position as follows:—General rates, struck £6085 15s Sd, paid £2119 0s Id; outstanding, £3966 15s 4d; special and hospital rate, struck £5148 13s 4d, paid £1579 19s 2d, outstanding £3SGS 14s 2d. Arrears (three years): Gen oral £431 Is 3d, paid £9l 14s 7d, outstanding £339 6s Sd; specials, £3Ol 11s Sd; paid £B6 5s Id, outstanding £215 6s 7d.
County Balance-Sheet
The audited balance-sheet for the year ended March 31, 1935, was received from tho Audit Department and approved for publication.
Overseer’s Report
The county engineer (Mr I’. H. Eggcrs) reported as follows: Cheltenham riding.—Tho section of No. 377 main highway in tho riding has been shaped and trimmed by the grader. Roadmen have been engaged removing slips, cleaning out drains and water-tables, and attending to maintenance work on roads other than main highways. A large timber culvert on Barrow’s road has been redecked, and minor repairs to bridges in the riding effected. Kiwitea riding.—Grading work has been carried out on tho section of No. 52 main highway and pot-hole repairs attended to. The contractor has made a start delivering maintenance metal on this road. On roads other .than main highways the usual maintenance work has received attention. AA’aituna riding.—On the section (fi No. 377 main highway small slips have been removed and surfaco work attended to. Scrub and fern have been cut back, small slips removed and water-tables cleaned out on the clay section of the Mangapipi road. Some repair work has been carried out on the Rangitikei Valley road south, and it will be necessary to renew a timber culvert on .this road with concrete pipes. Ongo riding.—Tho section of No, 377 main highway in tho riding has been kept in order by the grader. Pot-hole repairs have received attention and water-tables cleaned out. The roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work throughout tho riding, as well as assisting with repair work in the Cheltenham and AVaituna riding 3. Willows havo been placed for protection of the ford on the Parorangi road, Kimbolton riding.—Tho sections of Nos. 52 and 53 main highways have been kept in fair condition by the grader. Roadmen have been engaged widening and fencing the damaged sections of No. 52 main highway, as well as removing a few. slips, A limit eft 1
quantity of maintenance metal has been carted. On roads other than main highways the usual maintenauco work has becu carried out and overhanging fern and scrub cut back. Peep-o-Day riding. The roadman has attended to tho • maintenance of road surfaces aud cleaning out of water tables ou tho section of No. 52 main highway; also removing small slips aud carrying out repair work on the Bluff, Peep-o-Day and Hogg’s roads. A fail" amount of improvement work has been carried out on the unmetalied section of the Maugapapa road, and this road is at present opeu for light motor traffic, Paldhikura riding.—Roadmen have attended to tho usual maintenauco work throughout tho riding; also removing numerous slips and repairing washouts. A considerable amount of work has been done on the clay section of AVaipura road in the way of removing slips and repairing road surfaces which had been badly cut up during tho wet season. This extra work is now well in hand and the road in fair condition for light motor traffic. On the far end of Pcka road further trouble has been experienced with fresh slips coming down, but these have now been removed. A fair amount of repair work to damaged sections of the Mangarere road has been carried out, and tho grader would be employed to improve the clay section as soon as weather conditions aro favourable. Some extra eulvertiug will be necessary on this road to cope with the storm water. Rangiwahia riding.—The section of No. 52 main highway has been trimmed by the grader and pot-holo repairs attended to. A 9in. concrete pipe culvert has been put in to replaco an old timber culvert near tho Mangarimu School. The roadmen have car-, ried out repair work on tho AAhare Main South, To Para Para andMangaliuia East roads. All roads in this riding aro at present clear of slips. The contractor has made a start delivering maintenance metal on To Para Para road. Hautapu riding.—As usual all the roadmen in this riding have been kept going removing numerous fresh aud old slips in tho section of No. 52 main highway and tho Kawhatau roads, and with tho improvement in -weather conditions the work is well in hand. The section of No. 52 main highway and some of the Kawhatau Toads have been improved by tho grader. Minor repair work has been carried out on all roads in tho riding, Tho contractor has made a start delivering maintenance metal on tho section of No. 52 main highway.
