Board Cannot Make Grant Towards Assembly Hall
BEPLY TO BUSSELL STBEET’S BEQUEST. Mr. J. A, Grant presided at the meeting of the Bussell Street School Committee last evening. Also present: Messrs. J. P. McDavitt (secretary), M. J. MeArtney, T. Simpson, C. S. Trask, W. A. Boniface, G. W. Coppell. Tho Wanganui Education Board advised that it would provido a contrivance for ono of the exit doors to prevent the danger of slamming. It was regretted that there was no possibility of making a grant towards an assembly hall, despite recognition of the fact that jt was a necessary adjunct. Tho headmaster (Mr. F. C. Campbell) reported a present roll of 222. The average attendances for the first three weeks wero 02, 90 and 89 per cent, of the roll. Ono case of scarlet fever had been reported. Arrangements for the school concert were progressing satisfactorily; it would bo held in the Coronation-hall on October 24. Summer sports were now in progress. Tho gardens were receiving splendid attention from the groundsman. The headmaster reciprocated the congratulations extended t'o the school by Terraco End.
Mr. E. J. Wright forwarded his resignation from the post of caretaker, and it was decided to call applications for the position. Mr. Boniface reported on liis visit to tho school, and asked the committee to consider the matter of providing netting for the two tennis courts which are already laid down. Members were fully sympathetic, but were doubtful if funds were sufficient to put the work in hand. It was decided to obtain an estimate of- the cost.
Next month’s visiting committee is Messrs. Simpson and Grant;
