MOTOR FATALITIES
More Deaths Than in Wars
The major conflicts in which, the United States of America has participated—tiamely, the Revolutionary War, the war of 1812, the Mexican War, the Spanish American War, and the World War—have occupied a total period of 15 years of hostilities and resulted in the deaths of 300,000 American soldiers. Automobile traffic accidents during the last 15 years have (says the July issue of American Civil Engineering) been responsible for the deaths of 325,000 Americans. In the last 10 years 273,112 persons were killed by automobiles. The average number of murders per year is 11,500; the average number of deaths by automobiles is 30,000. Most of these deaths occur in the country, in tho daytime, on dry pavements, and where the road is straight. During the year 1933 automobile accidents in the United States resulted in the deaths of 29,000 persons, and the injury of 850,700 others. Ono more fact will suffice to indicate, what is perhaps the greatest proximate cause of all this useless slaughter. At 20 miles per hour a car can stop within 3S feet; at 60 miles per hour a distance of 263 feet will be required to bring it to a stop.
