From Our Own Correspondent. There was a good attendance at a euchre and dance conducted by members of the Manawatu Heads Fire Brigade on Friday evening. The prizes in connection with the euchre were won as., follows: Lucky Gay Gordons, Mr T. Sim and Miss E. Ellers; Monte Carlo, Mr A. King and Miss E. Walls. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr N. Alsop. Supper was dispensed by members of the ladies’ committee after which dancing was resumed and continued until a late hour. Fire Board Matters. Mr A. If. Gierke, of Wellington (chairman) presided over the quarterly meeting of the Foxton Fire Board. Also present were Messrs L. H. Hutton ( Wellington), J. K. Hornblow, M. E. Perreau, J. Ross and tho secretary (Mr It. Rangiheuea). -The chairman reported that, lie had made satisfactory arrangements lor tho purchase of the required amount *of hose to bring the brigade’s equipment up to standard. This had now como to hand and most of the couplings had now been changed. He added that an inspection of the station had disclosed a much improved state of affairs. Tho brigade superintendent (Mr C. McArtncy) in his report for the current quarter, stated that the present strength of the brigade was made up of 17 men of all ranks and at this number it was considered fully equipped. Two calls had been attended to. The brigade had had six practices during the quarter and the attendance averaged 12.5. The changeover to instantaneous couplings was now completed and a further issue of new hose was to hand. In conclusion he recommended the installation of an extension ’phone bell from the ’phone box to the bedroom door in order to enable calls to be received when no one was on watch. The report was adopted, the question of telephone extension being left to the local committee with power to act. The chairman recommended the reenamelling of tho fire engine which, he said, was rather shabby. Mr Ross reported that the fire engine was giving a certain amount of trouble, particularly in starting. Mr Hutton said that tho reason for the slow starting was possibly tho cold weather.. If that was so'a radiator heater should be installed at a small cost which would keep the water in the engine always warm and give Instant starting. It was decided to review the matters mentioned at tho next meeting of tho board. Hard-time Social. A hard-time social organised by members of tho Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild, attracted a large attendance on Thursday evening last. Rev, A. Fotlieringhani presided. The judging of the costumes was in the hands of the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs M. E. Perreau), their decision finally being given in favour of Mr and Mrs J. Symon. The presentation of a bouquet composed of garden produce was then made to Mrs Perreau by the president of the guild, Mrs J. Ross. Everyone present heartily entered into the spirit of tho evening, and a thoroughly jolly time was spent throughout. A mock court, conducted by Mr Perreau, who was assisted by Messrs D. R. Barron and J. T. Edwards, proved highly entertaining, and a most amusing item was the bride and bridegroom competition in which the appearance of tho various couples created much merriment. Other competitions which were held were won as follows: “Posting a letter,” Mr W. Scott; relay race, the men’s team (Messrs J. Symon, Haydock, \V. Symons and E. Murphy); musical competition, Mr VV. M. Thomas and Mrs D. R. Barron. A pianoforte solo contributed by Mr J. T. Edwards and an accordeon item by Mrs J. M. Thompson, were greatly appreciated. A portion of the evening was devoted to community singing which helped to maintain a party spirit. The accompaniments were played by Mr J. T. Edwards and Mrs M. A. Ross. A supper of hot pies and saveloys was served by the committee members, after which Rev. Fotheringham extended a vote of thanks to all those who had helped towards making the evening such a success, and lie thanked Mr and Mrs Perreau for acting as judges of the costumes. The committee responsible for the organisation and success of tho effort comprised Mesdames D. K. Barron, R. N. Speirs, J. T. Edwards and Misses B. Speirs and I. Patterson. Tennis Club. Perfect weather conditions prevailed on Saturday afternoon on the occasion of the oflicial opening of the Foxton Tennis Club’s 1935-36 season. There was a good attendance and a very enjoyable outing was experienced, the courts being in good order for play. Mr F. A. Mason (vice-president) performed tho opening ceremony in the unavoidable absence of tho president (Mr M. E. Perreau). MiMason extended a welcome to several visitors from Shannon, and expressed the hope that tho club would experience a very successful season. The courts were in good playing order and with an increased membership, everything pointed in the club’s favour. He urged members, at the first opportunity to have another hard court laid down during the year, as the grass became very unsatisfactory before the playing season was over. He stated that tho grounds, by having been handed over to the borough council, had .. it r.nlenrtio asset to the tennis playing public, but the advocacy for more hard courts was the essential point to bear in mind. He was glad to see so many junior players joining up with the club this year. He called upon Miss L. Thompson, the energetic secretary of the club, to drive the first ball to Mr R. Read (club captain). The remainder of the afternoon was devoted to the- playing of a Yankee tournament, the winners for the day being Miss D. Pillar and Mr Campbell (Shannon). Afternoon tea was dispensed by the lady members of the club. In the evening a dance organised by members of tho social committee, was held, a most enjoyable time being spent by those present. Tho duties or M’sC. were carried out by Messrs A. Anderson and R. Read, extras being contributed by Mrs M. A. Ross and Mr J. Newton. Supper was dispensed by the committee members, after which dancing was resumed and continued until midnight.
