A Pohanginu Janitor received rather more than a mild shock this week when ho was officially informed that ho was using an unregistered brand and was liable (o a lino of 10s for every animal which had been branded. As the iron has been in use for approximately 40 years, the aggregate liability reads something like piizc money in the Irish sweepstakes. However, the settler, a methodical Scot, was able to produce a 10-year-old receipt. Further evidence of the department’s “spring cleaning” was the notification received by another settler that he had three ear-marks and ho was asked to choose one of the three and surrender the others. To be throw-, through a plate-glass window and escape without a scratch was the experience of a New Plymouth architect, Mr W. N. Stephenson, on Wednesday. He was walking down Devon Street when, without warning, a man cannoned into him and sent him sprawling through a shop window. The glass was wrecked, but Mr Stephenson extricated himself without injury. The man who collided with Mr Stephenson was running across the street, and tripped on the kerb and crashed heatllorg into Mr Stephenson. The latter had his hand in his pocket and his shoulder made the Jirst impact with the window, this probably preventing injury.
