Mr Stallworthy Decides for Democrats
CRITICISM OF MR DOWNIE STEWART Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. ‘•I will bo lighting with the Democrats to sceuro a change of Government on a clear declaration of policy for the people and not for a privileged few only, ’’ said Mr A. J. Stallworthy (Independent, Eden), to-day. Ever since the formation of the Democrat party and Mr Stallworthy T attendance at its Wellington conference in the capacity of “an observer, ’' there has been speculation in the House of Representatives as to his political faith, and in no speech so far has he declared .himself, but the speech of tlie lion. Downio Stewart at Dunedin on Monday night decided the member for Eden in his course of action as far as the public are concerned. Commenting on Mr btewart’s proposal that "a number of Independents and groups of moderates” returned to the House at the coming election “should be able to fortify and recreate tho National Party,” Mr Stallworthy expressed strong disapproval of the utterances of tho cx-Miuistcr of Finance.
The political temper of New Zealand, ho said, would not staud for a temporising attitude. Mr. Stewart had resigned from Cabinet because in his opinion tho Government had ‘‘violated the principles of public good faith.” In view of this conviction it was astounding that Mr. Stewart could suggest mending'instead of ending the Government. If any Government were to be condoned in ‘‘violating tho principles of public good faith,” then elcarly that -would be an end to representative Government and tho people would be driven to Fascism or.anarchy.
