Hockey in the Manawatu
BROADWAY A AND PHOENIX DRAW. Two games were played in the Manawatu Hockey Association's senior competition yesterday, P.D.C. defeating Broadway B by two goals to one, and Broadway A and Phoenix playing a scoreless draw. Past, even play was -witnessed in the Phoenix-Broad way A ' game. Neither team could score because they lacked the finishing touches in the circle and the defence on both sides was very strong. O'Brien for Broadway and Morgan for Phoenix would have scored a couple of goals each but for overcaguerncss in the circle. The umpires were Messrs. P. McLachlan and W. H. Wilson. The match between Broadway B and P.D.C. was fairly oven, but P.D.C. had a slight territorial advantage. Broadway did not have the defence that P.D.C. had, and both their backs were speculating too much, which let P.D.C. through. It. Pacer and C. Ward scored for P.D.C. and H. Cutler for Broadway. The umpires were Messrs. A. E. Blackbourn and L. Martin. JUNIOR PIVE-ASIDE TOURNEY. i WIN FOR MASSEY COLLEGE A. Six teams competed in a junior fiveasido tourney at Takaro. Three rounds were played, at the conclusion of which Massey College. A and B teams were undefeated. The play-off saw the A combination prevail.
1 Messrs. N. Hanson and E. H. Smith had charge of the tournament. The umpires were Messrs. H. Byers, W. Inkpen, D. Wilton and V. Wallis. Results were as follow: First round: Massey College B 2 beat Combined Services 1; Massey College A 7 beat Broadway B nil; Broadway A 2 beat Phoenix 1. Second round: Massey College A 6 beat Broadway A 1; Massey Gollego B G beat Phoenix 0; Combined Services 2 beat Broadway B nil. Third round: Massey College B 5 beat Broadway B 0; Combined Services 2 beat Phoenix 0; Massey College 6 beat Broadway A 0. Pinal: Massey College A 3 beat M.'assey t College B I. Tho points at the conclusion of the third Tound were: Massey College A. 6; Combined Services, 4; Broadway A, 2; Broadway B, 0; Phoenix, 0.
