Bankers’ Golf Tourney at Bulls

N. H. HUME, OP PALMERSTON NORTH, WINS DEWAR CUP

Bank officers from Palmerston North, Wanganui, Feilding, Pahiatua, Kimbolton, Mangaweka, Hunterville, Marton and Bulls assembled in largo numbers on tho Rangitikei Golf Club's course on Monday for tho annual Dominion Day tournament for tho Bankers' Cup, presented by Messrs,- John Dewar, Ltd. Tho fixture, which, was inaugurated last year, was organised and controlled by tho staff of tho Bank of New Zealand, at Bulls, Mr. A. T. J. Shaw, the local manager, being responsible for most of the work involved. At tho conclusion of the day the cup and other trophies awarded were presented to tho various winners by Mr. E. A. Caldow, representing tho New Zealand agents for Messrs. Dewar. Cheers were given for the winners, and tho competitors also gave the Bulls players a Tound of cheers for their efforts towards the success of tho fixture.

A teams match was played in conjunction with tho medal round, and the Palmerston North A team proved successful 'with an aggregate of 292 against 291 returned by Wanganui. The placings were: Palmerston North A (Ashby, Hume, McWatters and Clayton) 292; Wanganui (Brinkman, Boss, Blundell and Grummitt) 294; Feilding (Carmine, Allen, McCorkindalo and Bush) 303; Pahiatua (Howden, Robertson, Walker and Irving) 308; Palmerston North B (Wensley, Taylor, Guincss and Murray) 31G. In tho morning a bogey competition was played and 21 players assembled on the courso to try conclusion with "tho Colonel,” who on tho whole had the best of the day. L. W. Frank, of Marton, was two up on the Colonel, and tho runner-up was K. L. Me Watters, of Palmerston North, who finished one up. Tho next in order were: L. Brinkman, C. E. B. Irving, L. J. Carmino (ono down); M. A. Bobertson, M. E. Alexander, M. E. Mansell, F. M. Fisher, T. D. Thompson, P. J. Howden, J. Boss (two down); J. M. Taylor, B. A. Blundell and A. W. Walker (three down); H. J. Hendry, A. E. J. Ashby, and F. K. Clayton (four down); F. H. Guiness and A. M. Bush (five down); and J. I. Moodie (six down.) The field for tho big event numbered 34, and although tho wind had freshened up a litto conditions were exceedingly pleasant, some good golf being produced. Tho end of the day saw a tie between N. H. Humo and A. E. J. Ashby, and in order to avoid a play-off as was done last year (when M. A. Bobertson, of Pahiatua, defeated Blundell and Howden in tho darkness) a count-back was made. The last six holes were all square, and the seventh back saw Hume do a two and. Ashby a three, the former thus taking first honours. The cards read as follows: N. H. Humo (Feilding) 82—14—08; A. E.
