A largo crowd o£ members and visitors from all parts assembled in tlio Halcombo liaU last Tuesday afternoon to celebrate the lirsl blrthuay of the Hal-combe-Kakariki branch ol the Womens Division of the 1’ armeis Li moil, fire hall and tables were beautifully decoraieu with Iceland poppies, daitodils and calendulas toning with tho bauds of oiangc and lemon crepe paper over the cloths. Conspicuous on the ullic.nl tahle was tne hund-omo birthday cake which was ieeu in lemon and mauve, the work of a member Airs Hush. All'S Aynsley, the president, extended a hearty welcome to Airs Collins, Alayoress of beilaing, and ah visitors in a neat speech, airs Collins declared the party open. Aiiss Alison Green contributed a vocal solo. Telegrams were received with congratulations and regrets from Airs K. Wilson, Dominion President of the Provincial, that they were unable to bo present. There was a pleasing incident when Aiiss V. Blunden, junior president, and Aiiss AI. -McLennan, junior secretary, presented" sprays to the following ladies: Mesdames Collins, Prison, Wickham, Niedorer. Field, Scales, Aynsley and Schaeren, Airs Aynsley returning the compliments to tho juniors, Alisses V. Blunden and Al. McLennan.' Airs Schaeren, secretary, next read out tlie apologies of absence from the various branches and members, several sending in telegrams of congratulation. Airs J.' Curtis next entertained ■with a song. Airs Poison, the first JUominion president, gave a very Interesting talk opt the early days, explaining how the Women's Division came to bo formed, the speaker being given three hearty cheers at the conclusion of her talk. A humorous play entitled ‘'Teatime Tempest," was kindly staged by six ladies ol the Atakino Women's Institute, which was well acted, arid greatly enjoyed bj all. Afternoon tea was now served. Alts Niederer, the organiser of the branch, lit the one candlo on tho cake. Airs Wickham, of Wanganui, gave a short talk also and apologised lor the absence of Airs Scott, the Dominion librarian. Aiiss AI. Gray, of Alarton, contributed a vocal solo. Airs Scales, a vice-president and our oldest member, was called on to cut tho cake. Airs Niederer spoke with special reference to the junior members, other speakers being Airs Prouse, president. of Feilding, Airs Alason, Airs Buchanan, who also brought best wishes from her mother, Mrs J. Cobbe. Mrs h ield, Provincial Housekeepers' secretary, Airs T. Green and Airs Colquhoun who thanked all the speakers and all those who had supplied the items. Alisses AI. and J. Bush contributed a tap dance. Airs Aynsley expressed regret that Airs E. Cowdrey, who ltad been the seerctaip since the branch first started and w'ho now had to resign her position owing to ill-healt and was unable to be present, and said thanks were due to her for her services to the branch. Aiiss V. Blunden spoke on behalf of the junior branch. The time passed all too quickly and the. very happy afternoon was brought to a close by the singing of tho National Anthem.
