VALUE AND EFFICIENCY OF “PERSON-TO-PERSON” SERVICE DEMONSTRATED
Last Friday a Palmerston North businessman on a visit to Christchurch was wanted urgently. It was known that ho was “somewhere” iu Christchurch, so the “person-to-person” telephone service was brought into operation. For live hours the search went cm—offices, hotels, warehouses, clubs were called, without success. Finally, at 4.45 p.m. a telephone in a suburban residence some miles out, startled thoso within with its prolonged ringing. Aro you Air. , of Palmerston North 7” inquired the exchange operator.
“That’s me!” was the reply. “Well hold tho line please/ Wellington has been searching for you for five liours. Wo'vo tracked you all over Christchurch but have just caught up with you, ’' The telephone conversation between Christchurch and Wellington followed and resulted in good business being transacted.
What did it cost for such a service? According to the tariff between Wellington and Christchurch, it cost 1/-, and if it had cost it would have been worth it, Air. told a “Times” representative as he gently tapped his order book.
