Improved Conditions In New South Wales

BUT STILL BIG BUDGET DEFICIT

The continued improvement in the ecouomio conditions oii this State is reflected in the Budget speech of the Premier and Treasurer, Mr It. B. Stevens, in the New South Wales Assembly to-night. He stated that the revenue for the year just ended amounted to £43,572,071, and the expenditure to £45,870,994, revealing a deficit of £2,298,923. The estimated revenue for the current year is £45,317,196 and the expenditure £47,007,196, leaving a deficit of £1,750,000, after providing £2,000,000 for sinking fund payments.

The Government intended further reducing tho wages tax where the weekly wages arc less than £5 from January 1. The relief thus afforded will aggregate £500,000. There will also be a reduction of 10 per cent, in rail freights from November 1 on wheat, fruit and dairy produce.
