DOWNIE STEWART AS INDEPENDENT NATIONALIST

The announcement that he was standing as an independent Nationalist was made by Sir. Downic Stewart to tho electors of Dunedin West to-night when he stated that the opponents of tho Government wanted to end it whereas he wanted only to mend it. He would give general support to the Government except where he differed on fundamental principles, but reserved the right of the free criticism lie had exercised during the last three years. He gave his reasons why tho Government should not be ousted at a time when tho country was just emerging from the depression. The Government were entitled to credit tor doing jnaiiv unpopular things. The speaker also congratulated .Mr. Coates on tho Budget. On the question of the exchange late Mr. Stewart said he still maintained he was right, but to attempt to reverse the process now cither suddenly or_ gradually would cause as much trouble as when the rate was raised. In his opinion Cabinet required to be drastically reconstructed and he complained that the Prime Minister was too passive while (he Minister of Finance was too active.
Democrat Campaign Opens Next Week
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Might. Air. T. C. A. Hislop, leader of the Democrat part.}-,'will open his campaign on Tuesday, October 1, in the Auckland Town Halt when he will announce the full details of the policy or the party and also the full list of selected and endorsed candidates.
