"DEVIL’S OWN" CUP WON BY J. GRAHAM

legal Golf Tournament Concludes MOST SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE The annual tournament for members of tho legal profession was concluded on the Manawatu Golf Club’s Hokowbitu. course yesterday and this year’s fixture must surely rauk as the most successful yet held by tho "Devil’s Own.” Tho weather was ideal throughout, tho entries well abovo expectations, and tho courso in magnificent order with bad lies few and far between. The principal event, tho "Devil’s Own” cup was productive of somo very fine golf and a large number of the games did not reach finality until the homo green was reached. In addition tho winners were required to play much below their handicaps, evidence of this being tho fact that ono defeated semifinalist was round the course in nett 6S. Tho winner was John Graham, of Feeding, who accounted for S. K. Siddells (Pahiatua) in the semi-final and who went on to defeat F. J. Christensen, of Marton (who had eliminated N. G. Whitemau (Masterton) in the other semi-final, both games finishing on tho eighteenth green; The competition was just as keen in tho Mortgagors’ Belief Stakes, which was won by C. N. Armstrong, of Wellington, tho runner-up being K. Kirkcaldie, of Auckland. In the Paupers’ Appeal Stakes tho four semi-finalists were from Wellington, and in the final E. C. Wiren accounted for T. P. McCarthy. The tournament secretary was Mr. G. 1. McGregor, and the official starter Colonel J. H. Whyte, and nothing was left to chance, tho arrangements being excellent.

At tho conclusion of the tournament tho players foregathered at tho club house where tho trophies were presented by Mrs. J. W. Eutherfurd, the wife of tho president of tho Palmerston North Law Society. Third day results arc as under: — ' "DEVIL'S OWN" CUP. Semi-Finals F. J. Christensen (Marton) beat IN. G. GREAT FIGHT FOR CUP The final for the cup was a great fight and tho issue was in doubt until Christensen failed to holo a long putt for tho 3 that would have squared the match on the home green Graham-had been dormy-one going to the eighteenth and both -were on with their seconds, Christensen being nearer the pin. Graham ruado the game safo when ho laid his approach putt dead, and Christensen’s par 4 was not good enough, tho hole being halved. It was solid plugging all tho way. The first hole was halved in 4 but Graham lost tho second when.ho failed with a 12-inch putt. He evened at tho nest, his 4 off the stick giving him a nett 3to 5. Willows was halved, and Graham took the lead at Stranges which he won with a nett 4to 5. He won Biverside wih the assistance of another stroko and was 2-up at tho turn, their cards to that stage reading:— Graham 4 6445564 3—41 Christensen 4554 5 564 3—41 Graham had had strokes at the third, fifth and seventh. Coming in, Christensen won tho tenth but lost Ti TVs where Graham did not

requiro to uso his stroke. Tko next two holes were halved, a weak approach by Christensen saving Barraud’s for Graham, who was 2-up a,nd three to play. Christensen won the sixteenth and tho seventeenth was halved, also tho eighteenth, Graham taking the match 1-up. Their cards for the return journey read:— Graham 55 4 54655 -1—43 Christensen 4 5 4 6 4 5 4 5 4—41 Graham had strokes at the thirteenth and fifteenth. The umpire for the final was Mr. J. E. Galloway. In the semi-final against Siddclls Graham would havo been beaten but for a very fine second half. Siddells was 3-up at tho turn and still 2-up with three holes to play. Ho had lost touch with his putter and his long game, though particularly good, was not good onougli against the 39 off the stick by Graham, who won tho match on tlio homo green. Heart-breaking Tee Shot S. W. Eapley had a very narrow escape of a holo in one when playing in the foursome. It was at tho ninth whero ho played a crisp teo shot which pitched just short of tho green and ran on to stop a couple of inches away from tho flag. It was a delightful shot and the “size” of his partner's putt was nothing to those which had escaped the heart-broken spectators. Quickest Hook in History Tho winning pair in the foursomes did not start as well as they finished. Marsack drove the firs* ball and ho “fluffed” it properly into the rough near tho trees. His remark was “Thank goodness I havo a partner.” Eapley gave him an eloquent look as ho took his partner's place on the tee. He addressed' tho ball with meticulous care and let fly, getting one of the quickest hooks iu history. It was so quick that it just missed going between his legs. The ball finished in the deep bunker alongside the homo green. Playing against E. D. Blundell in the semi-final of the Mortgagors’ Belief Stakes, C. H. Armstrong, a 4-handicap man, reached tho turn in 35. Ho was not so good coming iu, but ho completed the course in 77. S. Iv. Siddells has reason to feel satisfied with his game during tho tournament for his nett scores for his first five rounds wero 69, 73, 70, 6S and 68.
