Attractive List of New Films

PARAMOUNT WEEK RELEASES. Paramount, a company whoso name is inseparably associated with the history of the motion picture industry and who havo been responsible for bringing to the screen many of tho greatest epics ever filmed, are this year celebrating Paramount Week, inaugurated 15 years ago and symbolic of quality entertainment, from September 2 to 7. During that period, pictures from the Paramount Studios will be screened in leading theatres throughout New Zealand.

In Palmerston North tho Regent Theatre is participating with Charles Laughton’s very successful ‘ ‘ Ruggles of Red Gap,” which received spontaneous approval at its initial local screening on Saturday and is certain to draw big houses for the remainder of its season.

The motion picture industry continues to advance from year to year, not only from a technical point of view but also as regards tho stories filmed and tho calibre of tho players, who arc constantly being attracted from the stage to the screen. A striking example is tho acquisition of Noel Coward, most prominent figure in the theatre to-day, whoso first film, "Tho Scoundrel," will shortly bo released by Paramount. In this production Coward is supported by notable New York dramatic actresses, including Julie Haydon, Martha Sleeper, Hope Williams, and Rosita Moreno.

Among tbo films which Paramount will release either during Paramount Week or shortly following that period are:— ‘‘Paris in Spring,” a musical romance with a Parisian background, featuring Mary Ellis, noted opera star, and Tullio Carminati, who scored a big success opposite 1 Grace Moore in ‘‘One Night of Love.” Mac West in “Now I’m a Lady,” presenting tho inimitablo Mae West in a modern role. Mary Boland and Charlie Buggies, in “People Will Talk,” a hilarious domestic comedy. Marlene Dietrich in “Carnival in Spain.” “Shanghai,” with Loretta Young and Charles Boyer. “College Scandal,'” featuring Arliuc Judge, Kent Taylor, and Wendy Barrie. “Men Without Names,” with Fred Mac Murray, Madge Evans, Lynn Overman, and David Holt. W. C. Fields’ new comedy, “The Man on the Flying Trapeze.” Production activities for tho now season’s films are well under way at the Paramount studios, and already several pictures havo been completed for tho 1935-36 season. Although the final list of coming products will not be announced just yet, the following pictures are either completed or being filmed: — “The Crusades,” Cecil B. De Millo’a new film, with a cast headed by Loretta Young, Henry Wilcoxon, and lan Keith.

“Peter Ibbetsou,” with Gary Cooper and Ann Harding.

“Tho Big Broadcast of 1935,” with an all-star cast including Bing Crosby, Jack Oakic, Ethel Merman, Charlie Buggies, and Mary Boland. “Tho Last Outpost,” heading tho cast of which arc Cary Grant and Gertrude Michael.

“Annapolis Farewell, ’’ which Alexander Hall is directing at tho United States Naval Academy, with Sir Guy Standing and Bichard Cromwell in the cast.

The new schedule will embrace almost every conceivable type of motion picture, from operettas to Westerns, and will- include, comedy, drama, romance, and adventure. With such a variety of entertainment, Paramount hopes to satisfy the taste of every section of tho community.
