MEETING OE THE COUNCIL. The Kiwitea County Council met at Kimbolton yesterday, Cr. L. T. McLean (chairman) presiding. There were also present: Councillors W. Hair, W. P. Shaw, J. A. T. Brown, J. A. Williamson, F. E. Tappin, D. T. Couper, W. G. Clapham Beard. Correspondence. The following correspondence was dealt with:— From the Public Works Department, advising payment of balance of subsidy on the maintenance of main highways in the county for the year ended 31/3/35, amounting to £63 S 3 7d.—received. From the Mortgage Corporation, advising that the debentures or other securities vested in the Stato Advances Superintendent, in Tespcet of advances to local authorities made under part IIJ of the Local Bodies Loans Act, 1926, had been transferred to and vested in the Mortgage Corporation as from Juno 30, 1935. —received. From the Valuer-General, re claims for subsidy on general rates for year 1934-35, and advising that in order to expedite the payment of claims received, the . department had decided to ask all local bodies to mako out their claims in greater detail. Received. From the Commissioner of Transport, with reference to tho apportionment of heavy traffic license fees in terms .0! the Heavy Motor Vehicle regulations, 1932.—received.

From the Public V orks Department, forwarding copy of tho main highway annual estimates for 1935-oG, cohering both construction and revenue funds. Details were as follows: Construction account was £4 for Harre’s bridge on the Feilding-Hunterville highway', the grant being the final payment. On the maintenance side the following items were enumerated: Awahtiri-Manga weka, via Kimbolton highway, £1384 (£3 for £1 subsidy); Cheltenham-Coul-ter’s line, reconstruction and sealing, £5700 (£3 for £1); Kimbolton-Apiti highway, £l5O (£3 for £1); FeildingHunterville, £630 (£3 for £1). From the Commissioner of Transport, setting for the Transport Department’s requirements in connection with the check-up .on brakes and lights of motor vehicles.—Received.

From tho Medical Officer of Health, advising that the total cost of maintaining.tlio health inspector for this county for thq six months ended 31/3/35 had been slightly less than the estimate on which tho council’s contribution was based and that tho contribution for the June quarter had been adjusted accordingly.—Received.

From the postmaster, Feilding, acknowledging receipt of the council's letter re the trees growing on tho depart-

meat’s property at Kiwitea, and advising that the matter will receive early attention.—Tho county clerk reported that tho matter was being dealt with.

From the secretary, Loyal Kimbolton Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., thanking tho council for the attention given to the footpath fronting tho Lodge property in Edward street. —Received. From L. R. Dalziell (Ohingaiti), A. M. Caird (Karcwarewa) and R. E. Beckett (Hinau) requesting permission to re-crecf. boundary fences nearer road line. —Granted during the pleasuro of tho council.

From tho Mangarimu School Committee, requesting three concrete pipe 3 for draining purposes at tho school.--Granted. From H. H. Bryce, Eangiwahia, asking permission to fence off the school road at Hinau.—Granted. County Finances. The treasurer reported on the county finances.as follows: County fund account debit, £4613 Ss lOd; employees’ accommodation special loan account, credit £26 9s lid; do., on fixed deposit, £700; Kimbolton cemetery account, credit £9 9s 4d; land fund No. 2 account, credit £229 14s sd; Eangiwahia cemetery account, credit £lO 16s 9d, Waituna cemetery account, credit £4 13s Is.

Rate Payments. The treasurer reported that of the total amount of general rates struck, namely, £6085 13s 9d, £63 1 s 4d had been paid to date. The special rates levied totalled £5148 12s Cd and to date £49 7s Id had been paid. In addition payments on account arrears had been received as follows: On account general Tates, £55 9s; on account special rates, £52 13s 4d. Arrears outstanding amounted to: General, £375 12s 3d; specials, £248 18s 4d.

Overseer’s Report. The county engineer (Mr. F. H. Eggers) reported as follows: — Main Highways: Tho Nos. 52, 53 and 377 section of main highways havo been kept in fair condition by the grader and pot-hole repairs carried out. Numerous slips have been removed on the No. 52 highway in tho Hautapu riding, and similar work carried out on the Nos. 53 and 377 main highways. Tho roadmen have also attended to the work of repairing surfaces and cleaning out of watertables. It will be necessary to construct a stone groyne for protection of tho timber bridge approach on the No. 377 main highway near Rewa, in order to prevent further erosion.

Roads Other Than Main Highways. Cheltenham Riding: Grading work has been carried out on the Cheltenham Cross, Beaconsfield Valley, Hayne’s, Levitt’s and Barrow’s roads. Pot-hole repair work has received attention and small slips havo been removed, and grading work carried out.

Kiwitea Riding: Perry’s and Coulter’s roads have been improved by the grader. Pot-hole repairs have been attended to and small slips removed, and the usual maintenance work attended to. Waituna Riding: The roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work and removing slips, as well as being engaged most of his time attending to necessary work on fhe No. 37/ main highway. Ongo Biding: The main section of tho Parorangi road and Wilson’s hue have been trimmed by the grader, and small slips removed. The usual maintenance work has been attended to throughout tho riding. Iho roadman has also attended to work on the main highway, as well as assisting with work in tho Cheltenham riding. Kimbolton Riding: Tho roadmen have assisted with (ho maintenance work on the suction of tho No. 52 and 53 main highways and roads other than main highways in tho riding. Small slips have been removed and pot-hoic repairs carried out. Tho approach to Parson‘s Ford bridge on the Terraco Toad has been improved. The roadmen havo also screened metal in tho Kimbolton pit for pot-hole repair work, as well as assisting with tho testing of a new pit in the Feep-o-Day riding-Peep-o-Day Riding: The roadman on the eastern section of tho riding has been engaged in effecting repairs on the section of tho No. 52 main highway; also attending to maintenance work on Middle, Bluff, Peep-o-Day and Hogg’s roads. On the western section the roadman has attended to maintenance work, as well as slips and rcpniiing the decking on the Pakihikura road bridge. A road subsidence took place on the Pakihikura road near the junction with the Kiwitca-Tapuae road. This short section of road is being widened.

Pakihikura Riding: The continuous wet weather has brought down a number of ‘largo slips, the Otara Hill and Pcka road suffering most, and a number of extra hands were employed to cope with the work, blips also came down on the clay section of the Waipura road, and these have siuco been removed. Several cubic yards of rough metal havo been carted out. in order to repair subsidences on Marshall’s road. The landslide on. this road is still giving a lot of trouble. A few yards of metal have been carted out from Otara Hill for repairs to weak places on the Waipura road. Arrangements have been made to carry out pot-hole repairs on Stewart’s Flat. A fair amount of work has been carried out opening culverts, removing slips and cleaning watertables on tho Mangarcre road.

Eangiwahia Riding: Tho roadman has assisted with maintenance work, carting out pot-hole repair metal and general on the section of the No. 52 main highway. Repairs to storm water damage havo been effected and slips re-

moved on tho Whare, Main South and Mangahuia East roads. Very little extra labour has been engaged during the month and all roads in the riding are at present fairly clear of slips. Hautapu Riding: In this riding wo have again had considerable trouble with slips, necessitating the employment of a number of extra men. Quito a. number of new slips came down on tho section of the No. 52 main highway; also on the Upper Kawhatau roads. Tho Ciiff road near the Mangaweka bridge is at present very clear of slips. A subsidence of the road took ulaeo 011 tho day section of road adjoining the Lagoon road near Sweet’s bridge. This damage has since been repaired by widening the road to a six foot track for horso traffic. Several largo slips came down on the Auputa Clay road last week, and the road has since been opened for horse traffic. On the metalled section of tho Mania road tho recent heavy rain storm caused quite a considerable amount of damage and I havo found it necessary to erect two fairly lung breastworks for protection of Iraflic and the work is well in hand.
