Increasing Use of Radio-Telephone
Tho King’s Silver Jubilee concession of 50 per cent, reduction in the rates for radio-telephone conversations between New Zealand and tho United Kingdom caused a marked increase in the traffic. New Zealanders in particular showed enterprise in taking advantage of tho opportunity, and the good effect of the stimulus given during the concession period is still being shown. When the half-rate concession ended, a permanent reduction was made to 15s per minute between New Zealand and Australia and £1 14s per minute between New Zealand and the United Kingdom, with good results, the number of calls last July totalling 61, compared with 31 for July of the previous year. During the first seven months of this year, radio calls numbered 366, and when there are 25 more tho full total for 1934 will bo reached. The use of the radio-telephono for overseas communication is not confined to tho four centres. The current year’s traffic included calls which originated from Te Aroha, Rotorua, Timaru, Levin, Hastings, Grevmouth and Masterton.
