Schacht-Goebbels Quarrel

Split in German Ranks OVER EXTREME NAZI METHODS United Press Association.— By Electric Telegraph.— Copyright. Received Wednesday, li p.m. LONDON, Aug. 21. The News-Chronicle’s Berlin correspondent says that an open quarrel, which may have far-reaching consequences to the Hitler regime, has broken out between Nazi extremists, led by Dr. Goobbels and Dr. Schacht, following the latter’s speech on August 18, which Dr. Goebbels ordered to be heavily censored before publication, especially the portion in which Dr. Schacht openly attacked the extremist Nazis, whose violent methods, he said, were hindering Germany’s economic recovery. Dr. Schacht is supported by powerful conservative industrialists, also the conservative element' of the Reichswehr. He intends to place before Hitler the realities of the situation and will also further attempt to persuade Hitler to call off the anti-Jewish campaign. It is reported that he is ready to resign unless he is assured Germany’s serious economic situation is secured against disturbance by violent outside elements.

A cable from Berlin on August IS said:—The Minister of Economies ar.d leading German banker, Dr. Hjalmar Schacht, speaking at Kouigsbcrg, at tho opening of the East German l 1 air, attacked tho Jew-baiting methods of Herr Julius Streichcr, head of tho anti-Semitic movement. He declared that tho Nazi programme, whilo debarring Jews* from comradeship and citizenship, admitted them to tho operation of the laws which were now being framed. Tho Jews, therefore, could not arbitrarily be victimised. This also applied to the religious question. Germany stood midway in the greatest task in history. Whoever interfered with tho Government’s policy did a dangerous thing. Priests must not intermingle with politics, and Jews must realise that they were no longer dominant in the State. Leadership, not individual action, must solve these problems. Tho people’s earnings were safe, but rigorous economy must be exercised.
