Assessing damages at £6OO, Sir Michael .Myers gave judgment lor plaint ill! in a breach of promise case to-day.i; The parties tvero Gladys May Ritchie,;.- of Wanganui, aged 40, and William Thomas Ridd, aged 5-', formerly of Wanganui and now of Auckland. Plaintiff claimed £3009 and produced several letters which passed between t lie parties. If he alleged that a proposal to marry was made to her by defendant at Pipiriki House on June 11. 19110. The defence denied that aai engagement to marry ever existed, but that if it did it was broken by plaintiff and not by Ridd. His Honour found that there was a promise .to marry and that there was a breach, pi: that promise. Referring to gifts by Ridd to Miss Ritchie of bonds and Post Office certilicates to the value of £9OO, his Honour could not appreciate the force ol! defendant giving such a reward to au employee subordinate'to himself who was already in reccipt. of a satisfactory salary and to give .that reward simply because of the .g6od services rendered to the firm.
