Fifty Thousand Club Gets Going

Judging by the enthusiasm displayed at a genoral meeting of citizens held last evening, the Palmerston North 50,000 Club is well launched and it should not be long before the city is feeling the effects of the work of the new organisation.
The Mayor, who presided, expressed gratification at the large attendance. The first step taken was the confirmation of rules the club, these being presented by the provisional committee that was set up at the previous meeting, and adopted.
Objects of Club. The objects of tho club were set out as follow: — To further by whole-hearted co-oper-ation the advancement and expansion of the city of Palmerston North, and to assist in the development of the city and surrounding district generally. (a) By tho creation and fostering ot that necessary spirit of civic pride and enthusiasm which should exist in the mind of every man, woman and child in the city and district.
(b) By furthering the establishment and expansion in the city and surrounding district of such industries as may be suitably and economically carried on, giving special prominence to those related to the products of the district, to the production of which the natural resources of the city and district so fittingly lend themselves.
(c) By the encouragement of afforestation, irrigation, aviation, railway extension and improved transport..facilities, improved roading wherever found necessary, by co-operating with existing leagues and organisations which may have for their object the carrying out of theso proposals. It is intended that this club shall not usurp the function of, but shall co-operate with, any other body or corporation having kindled objects.
(d) By encouraging the establishment and extension of manufactories within and around the city of Palmerston North, and by providing reliable information as to factory sites, motive powers, natural conditions, labour available, transport facilities, markets, etc.; the club to establish an office for the handling of this most important branch. (e) To co-operate with all existing or hereafter established organisations iu securing improved shipping aud railage facilities, handling imports and expotts, quicker and cheaper transit. (f) To co-operate with auy organisation for tho promotion of education iu all its branches, with special reference to the ..technical aud art schools, agricultural colleges, and the establishment of necessary continuation schools, more particularly in relation to trade and commerce.
(gj. To impress on ail the citizens and authorities in New Zealand that by reason of its geographical position the city of Palmerston North is ideal for the holding of all North Island and Dominion conferences and by auy aud every means to foster and encourage the holding of such conferences iu the city. (h) To co-operate with the City Couir cii and other local bodies in beautifying the city and surrounding district and to foster- and encourage the establishment'and- development of motor camp sites, picnic sites and scenic and other reserves.
(i) By any and every moans to show the citizens of the Dominion and tho outside world that Palmerston Northbright, beautiful, busy—is an ideal spot to live in, excellent in its health records, municipal enterprise, scholastic organisations and for its natural beauty of situation which have gained for it the reputation of being tho “Garden City of New Zealand.” (j) To secure tho interest, active support, and solid and united action of members of Parliament and public men iu the furtherance ef all matters and questions pertaining to tho welfare and the advancement of tho city of Palmerston North and the surrounding district.
(k) To collect and publish statistics and other information relating to any of the subjects dealt with in the foregoing objects. (l) To organise carnivals and other attractions and in connection therewith to purchase, sell, hire or ruu iu Palmerston North and elsewhere, circling waves, roundabouts and any other carnival attraction or side show and generally to assist all athletic sports clubs. (xuj To do all Such other things as are incidental to the attainment of the above objects or any of them.
No Distribution of Profits. The income and property of the club whencesoever derived shall bo applied solely towards the promotion of the objects of tho association, and no portion thereof shall* bo paid or transferred directly or indirectly to any person who at any time is or has been a membet of the club,, or to any person claiming through any member —provided that nothing herein, contained shall prevent payment iu good faith of remuneration to any officers or servants of the club, or to any member of the club, or othet person in return for services actually rendered to the club.
The number of members of the club is unlimited. .Every person, company or corporate body resident or carrying on business within the city or district shall become members of the association on payment of tho following annual subscription:— For individuals 2s (id, for business firms and for companies, a minimum of one guinea, for junior associate members (under 21 yehrs) Is. Every person On payment of one guinea shall be deemed to be a life member. Election of Officers. Officers, were elected as lollow: President, Mr. F. Jackson; vicc-prcsi dents, Messrs J. Ireland, H. E. Townshend, R. L. O'. Aitchison, A. Clark and M. N. Wallace; executive, Messrs H. Kissling, G. Tremaine, G. G. Priest, H.
B. Free, P. S. Larcomb, A. P. Stuart, C. V. Day, A. W. Just, W. H. Brown, C. N. R-abone, A. M. Lascellcs and W. B. Tenncnt.
Air. Jackson, on assuming ofiiee, declared that the prospects ahead of the city were exceedingly bright. The Palmerston North Drapers, Clothiers and Boot Retailers’ Association forwarded a donation of one guinea for which they were heartily thanked. A vote of thanks was also passed to the provisional committee for services rendered to date.
Mr. P.- S. Lareomb was thanked for his offer to carry on as temporary secretary until tho appointment by the oxecutive of a permanent officer.
Air. W. F. Cutler voiced the hope that the Railway Department would be prevailed upon to establish branch works in Palmerston North.
