Winter Wool Sale

(Special to “Times.”)

WELLINGTON, Last Night. Levin and Co. report:— Tho winter wool sale was held today. The total offering was 4573 bales made up of 299 G bales of crutchings and 1877 bales of fleece. Our offering was 1050 bales. There was a good attendance of buyers. Thc greater pro portion of the offering consisted of crutchings. Crossbred crutchings realised thc highest prices, tho best selling at from 7d to ~:,d. On the other hand halfbred and Merino criitchingi do not quite fit consumers’ requirements and were carrying heavy condition. The prices bid were therefore comparatively disappointing. Bidding came from all quarters, particularly from Japan. The bulk of the crossbred flcccc offered was only of average quality and growers’ anticipations on many of the larger lots were not realised. A\c quote:—

Merino fleece oddments, 10d to 123 d; halfbred fleece oddments. Pjd to lljd: crossbred fleece, average quality, 4(5/48. The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report:— The Wellington crutching sale was. held to-day. The catalogue was 4573 bales, .1877 bales of fleece wool and 299 G bales of crutchings and oddments. It was an unusually large offering for a winter crutching sale and attracted a full bench of buyers. Competition i'or crutehings was exceptionally keen, especially for course lots. 1 Finer halfbred crutchings were not so eagerly competed for and prices were rathe: disappointing. While orders for fleee: wool seemed to be in the market tin limits were lower than expected with the result that a large proportion of the fleece offering was passed. Thc top price for crutchings was "id per lb. and for other good lots fild to 7d was common.

The New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op. Distributing Co., Ltd., report: The first and only crutching sale of thc 1934-35 season was hold to-day. ’There were lepicsentatives from Bradford, Canada. Japan and the Continent and Dominion mills, all of whom competed freely for their various requirements. Thc total offering was 4573 bales, oi. which our catalogue comprised 923 bales, all of which, with the exception of fleece wool and lambs’ wool, was quitted. The bull: of the catalogue comprised crutch ings, together with a few parcels of fleece wool, not sufficient of the latter to warrant special quotations or to give nnv guide of the market prospects. Fleece wool and lambs’ wool met with verv restricted competition and in niativ cases failed to reach valuations. Generally speaking, tne crutchings opened up in splendid order and commanded spirited bidding and realised prices above expectations. We quote: Crossbred crutchings, good to super, 7J to 7;3d; crossbred crutchings, medium, 53d to Gjd; crossbred crutchings, seedy and inferior, 3?<l to old:.crossbred bribes and pieces, 4d to G]d: lambs’. 7Sd to 9:]d; dead, 5d to Cp:; locks, -id to 4.1 d.

Dalgetv and Co., Ltd., report:— At the crutchings and fleece sale today. we offered 1100 bales and sold 900 at auction. Thc quality and condition of the crutchings offered was exceptionally good. There was a keen and excited demand for crossbred crutchings, Australia and America being well in the market, with Japanese competition not so- pronounced as in the three seasons.

Super crutchings sold at Old to 7Jd; medium to good, 5Jd to 7ld; seedy and inferior. Mid to sd. A large proportion of the fleece offered carried the owners’ high reserves and a fair percentage was passed in. Bellies and pieces sold readily at satisfactory prices and in a small offering of lambs’ wool the only buyers interested appeared to be those operating for Australia.
