New Zealand Chilled Beef
EXPORTS SHOW INCREASE "An experimental shipment, comprising -174 quarters of chilled beef, whs made from the Dominion in February, .1933, and from that dato up to the present G9,8G7 quarters havo been exported. As illustrating the development of the chilled bcof industry,|it may be mentioned that, whereas 15,118 quarters were shipped for the twelve months ended June 30, 1034, the quantity for the twelve months ended June 30, 1935, fcdchcd 53,755 quarters." Thus docs the annual report of the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board refer to the growth of the chilled beef industry in the Dominion, an industry which, only a short time ago was in its infancy, is now developing into a very ‘healthy youngster, promising great things for the future. "Favourable reports' have been received from Home regarding the quality and dressing of these shipments, and thero is no doubt that the chilled beef industry has become established," continues the report. "With the successful inauguration of this new industry, the board and the Government are deeply impressed with the need for ensuring that auy quotas fixed by the British Government make adequate provision for the development of this trade. With the aid of top-dressing. New Zealand, with its widespread and ample rainfall, has great beef potentialities. "A number of freezing companies made considerable capital expenditure in equipping their works with the most modern methods for treating chilled beef, and likewise the shipping companies continue to to equip further vessels with chilled beef chambers. Other works arc at present investigating the position with a view to considering their entry into this branch of the trade. "It is of the first- importance to see that only chilled beef of suitable quality is exported from this Dominion, end farmers who wish to produce beef of chiller quality must pay attention to breeding the right type." An interesting point mentioned in the report, in this connection, is that small consignments of chilled beef are being made to Honolulu. It'is also worthy of mention that the beard as arranged last year, has been making a grant of £1250 per annum to the Low Temperature ‘Research Station at Cambridge, England, where problems of refrigeration are boing investigated.
