11l connection with the .shipping strike the Union Company’s Ngakuta, the Adelaide company’s freighter Comma, the Howard {Smith’s collier Period and the freighter Era were added to the list of idle vessels yesterday. MELBOURNE, Aug. 18.

As the shipowners arc determined not to employ the Murada men until all the idle vessels are manned, it is reported that there is no immediate prospect of the shipping strike ending unless by order of the Court at a compulsory conference next Wednesday. At a mass meeting at Melbourne yesterday the speakers feared the shipowners intended to victimise the Murada men, and it was decided to continue the strike pending a meeting of the Federal executive officers in Sydney next Tuesday. Mr. F.' Clarke, general president, declared the owners’ terms would not he accepted until an assurance was given that the Murada men "would have the right of selection at at the first pick-up. The shipowners issued a statement to the effect that there was no change in their attitude which was defined on Friday.

Compulsory Conference

OBSERVANCE OF DECISIONS WILL BE ENFORCED. SYDNEY, Aug. 17. A compulsory conference of parties to the shipping dispute has been called by the Industrial Registrar for next Wednesday in Melbourne. It is competent for tho conference to determine tlic basis of settlement of the strike and compel the observance of its decisions.

At present 24 ships arc tied up and about 1300 men, whose wages amount to nearly £IOOO per day, are out of work.
