Vigorous Opposition to Nazi Campaign

CATHOLICS AND PROTESTANTS UNITE IN DEFENCE OF FAITH

The Manchester Guardian’s special Berlin correspondent says the German religious crisis has reached an intensity unparalleled even in the days of Bismarck’s ‘‘kulturkampi’.’’ Hitler Youth do not dare parade in many Catholic villages and the pavements are deserted whenever there is a procession in the large towns .of the Rhineland and Bavaria.

Hauer, leader of the Neo-Pagans, who was visiting Munster to conduct a monster meeting, was greeted by large crowds of Catholics and Protestants singing hymns. They escorted him to his meeting'at which they sang hymns continuously drowning Hauer’s speech.

A Catholic bishop was held responsible and Black Shirts arrived at the palace and arrested him, whereupon he donned his canonical robes. As it is impossible to take a bishop thus dressed to a concentration camp, the Nazis retired discomfited.

The attendance at both Catholic and Protestant churches is increasing and vigorous anti-Nazi preachers attract enormous congregations.

The Neo-Pagans, however, are increasing their membership among the young people.

The Governor of Lower Bavaria has ordered civil servants to remove their children from Catholic schools and several Catholic papers have been suppressed. Dr. Ley, speaking at Ratisbon, declared that the Nazi party claims the soul of every German. Catholicism or Protestantism docs not matter.

ATTEMPT TO BOYCOTT OLYMPIC GAMES

Senator King formally introduced his resolution proposing a State Department investigation into the Nazis’ alleged persecution of Jews, Catholics and other minorities with a view to severing diplomatic relations with Germany. The resolution has been referred to the Foreign Relations Committee.

The Amateur Athletic Association is being urged to cancel American participation in tho Olympic Games at Berlin in 1936 by both Jewish and Catholic leaders.

The Berlin correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that following similar bans elsewhere in Germany the Nazi authorities have dissolved the East Prussian Stalllhclm and confiscated their property. The secret police have also proscribed, with pam of imprisonment, the wearing of uniforms and badges, the Church Youth Association's indulgence in sports and organised marching, and other group activities.

The leader of the Hitler Youth Movement (Herr Franconia) has demanded that the Jews be banned from hostels, adding that Germans cannot bo asked to sleep under the same roofs as aliens. There is generally nervous tension caused by these and similar measures. It is revealed by a statement from Leipzig that police nrc warning persons ngainst disseminating rumours that prominent Nazis have been arrested. The authorities arc also worried at the rapid rise of the cost of living. Numerous butchers have been arrested for profiteering and other traders have been warned that price-raising may lead to imprisonment.

Wayside shrines and statues have been mutilated arousing intense Catholic feeling. The Nazi Press blames Catholic agents' provocateurs among the "political Catholics." Following the ban on the wearing of uniforms the Nazis attacked a Catholic patrol attending a funeral and stripped off their uniforms. Threo resistors were imprisoned.
