Takaro’s Progress

PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION HOLDS ANNUAL SOCIAL.

Tho fifth annual social of the Takaro Progressive Association was held this week in tho Parish hall. Mr. E. H. Smith, the president, extended a welcome to Mr. and Mrs. Mansford, tho Mayor and Mayoress. Pleasure at tho prcscnco of Mr. and Mrs. Mansford was voiced by Mr. Smith, who said that tho Mayor took a kindly interest in the association and beeauso of that interest he had favourably considered a number of requests made by it. Takaro had considerable sports interests with the Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club, the lastnamed section of which had, he understood, one of the largest memberships of such clubs in the city. Conducted in conjunction with that was the Table Tennis Club, which had enjoyed considerable success this season, and a Takaro resident had also been the prime mover in tho formation of a winter cricket school. Further, there were the Takaro Boy Scouts and Girl Guides,_ so that the district contributed materially to recreational life of the city. The speaker expressed the thanks of tho association to the Bowling CluH and the church committee .for allowing them the use of the hall on what was usually their card evening date. The Mayor said it gave Mrs. Mansford aiul liim great pleasure to attend. As Mayor lie had been made aware on numerous occasions of the work o. the association and the particular aims it had for that end of the city. It had always been a pleasure to him, and to members of the City Council, to be of any assistance. Takaro was a model locality and tho association had been instrumental in promoting a fine sense of civic responsibility. In conclusion, Mr. Mansford said ho thought that any good he had been able to do for Palmerston North as Mayor was being shared by many, and it was that kind of work, in tho interests of others, that commended itscli to him. The Takaro Progressive Association also worked for others and he hoped that it would continue to flourish in promoting the interests of Takaro. In tho early portion of the evening a number of entertaining items were presented by the following:—Mr. R. Packer and Mrs. W. Bigham (songs); Miss F. Whittaker, Miss Beryl Crystalland Mr. Weldon Whelan (elocution). Community singing was led by Mr. G. Houston and an "official handshake” served to introduce all those attending. Mr. J. 11.
