Glove and Saddle
(To the Editor.) . ,sir, —As a resident of Manawatu and Palmerston North for a number of years it was with pride I read a recent article written by an Australian dealing with the success of Keith Voitre, late of Palmerston North and now of Melbourne. In this article tho writer intimated that to a certain extent Keith Voitre’s success in the saddle could be traced to boxing. The writer mentAiled other jockeys who gained distinction in tho Toped arena, among them being. Bert Thompson, James Hayes and Billy May, but lie overlooked one in the person of the late Jimmy lieggarty-, who, 20 years ago, as a professional feather and lightweight, fought and beat the best that New Zealand and Australia could produce. Then the Great War broke out and Hcggarty enlisted with tho Canterbury Mounted Rifles and with them he went to Egypt where he took tho last long count. Now, Sir, as I am an ex-heavy weight, pugilist, and one who trained in the same gymnasium as Hcggarty, I thought I should mention that Hcggarty- li:/. been overlooked as a jockey and as a boxer. In conclusion, I wish Keith Voitre every success. Thanking you for your valuable space. —I am, etc., ALEXANDER CAMPBELL, Tokomaru,
