Regret at the illness of Mr. W. McKenzie, a past president of the Mann* wat u A. and P. Association, was expressed by the general committee ot that body yesterday, and it was decided to write to him wishing him a speedy recovery. <s> <s> <S> Appreciation of the services given bv Mr. J. R. McLinden, M.R.O.V .8., formerly of the staff of Massey Agricultural College, and regret at his impending departure for England, was expressed iu a resolution passed yesterday by the general committee of the Manawatu A. and P. Association. <t> <B> <S>
An order for possession of a house at 5 Andrew Young street, at present occupied by R. Crutch ley, a scrap metal dealer, was asked for in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday by Keren Betlinc Patterson, of Gisborne. Eight weeks’ rent, amounting to £O, was also claimed. The order was granted by the Magistrate, Mr. J. L. Stout.
Mr. W. Park, a former Mayor of Palmerston North, has been nominated as an honorary life member of the Manawatu A. and P. Association, it being stated at a meeting of the general committee yesterday that Mr. Park was one of the oldest members and had been a loyal supporter of the association for many years.
Advice lias been received from the Minister of Education (Hon. 8. G. Smith) by Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., that the application for the provision of additional accommodation at the Palmerston North Technical School lias been approved by Cabinet. The request was made owing to the increased numbers of pupils attending the institution, with resultant overcrowding.
The hospital authorities reported this morning that the condition of Mr. Frank Cowdrey, who was injured in a gelignite explosion on Friday at Hal combe, has shown no improvement and is still regarded as serious; the same applies to his soil, Maurice. Of Mrs. Cowdrey, the daughters, Nila and Beverly, and the two relatives, Raymond Davies and Mr. E. A. Robinson, it was said that they had shown a slight improvement.
Tucked away under the linoleum which covers the passage of the Palmerston North police station is a piece of board hiding an innocent hole in the floor. When the circumstances of its making are known, however, it bears testimony to the need for a new police headquarters in the city. The floor was so rotten that it failed to withstand the weight of a police, constable whoso foot disapeared into the void below, but fortunately he suffered no harm.
Resolutions of condolence were passed yesterday by the Manawatu and West Coast A. and IJ.1 J . Association ’s general committee with the relatives of the late Messrs, 0. E. Goosenmn (secretary of the Waikato A. and F. Association), W. G. Vickers (formerly the association’s district member for Levin), T. R. Whisker (Parewanui), Mrs. W. A. Grace (of Wanganui, a sister of Mr. B. C. Eglinlon, who is a member of the association) and Mrs. Coates (mother of lU. Hon. J. G Coates.)
With a view to brightening up the produce hall at the Showgrounds, a recommendation was made to the genera! committee of the Manawatu A. and P. Association yesterday that decorative work, on calico, should bo dona at the dark end, at a probable cost of £2O. The president said he had seen similar work at the Hamilton show and had been much struck by it, but the trouble was finance. The recommendation, after discussion, was referred back to the finance committee to obtain an alternative price for work of a more permanent nature.
