From Our Own Correspondent. i Defence Rifle Club. Practice shoots were held by the Ashhurst Defence Rifle Club last week over ranges 309 and 500 yards. Weather conditions were anything but pleasant, a light j-jiin and a strong front right wind keeping Lite marksmen on the alert. Several good scores were registered in spite of the conditions —a 3-1 by R. A. Jonesand S 3 each by R. Uomley and J. Searlc,These three marksmen eacli scored a to-, tai of 63 off the rifle. Detailed scores were as follow: ft. A. .Jones 29, .34, 63; R.. Komley 30, 33, 63; J. Fearle 30, 33, 63; H. Souther 28. 25, 53; C. Matthews 25, 27, 52;' H. Harris 24, 26. 50; B. Rook- 21, 23, 49. He is. however, making good progress toward convalescence. Rugby. The local third grade leant played a. competition match versus Feildiug thirds' on the local racecourse on Saturday. A very even and keenly contested game resulted in a win for the Ashhurst team bv live points to nil. ft. Pederson scored a try which was converted by R. Tait. A heavy ground kept both teams working hard and good'defensive work was shown by both sides, who were very evenlymatched. Ashhurst team’s record to date is three wins, one draw and four losses. Weather. Ashhurst, as with other districts, has had verv wet conditions for over a month now, June being an exceptionally wet period. Flooding occurred locally on several occasions, while snow made ns appearance low on the ranges during one or two very cold snaps. July entered with no promise of better conditions and tlic past week has proved a repetition o t the- June period, with cold winds, nen.\ .V rains and at times thick, misty rain. A few slips came down on the Gorge road as is usual in the winter months.
