I-lOCKEY FASHIONS IN MAN AWATU TO CHANGE

“tVe are not playing hockey in Non Zealand us it should be played,” complained Mr E. L. C. Aitehison at the executive meeting oi ! the Manawatu Hockey Association last evening, when he urged that Manawatu should combine with a nearby association and bring out a coach to New Zealand. Mr Aitehison pointed out how cricket had made great strides with the introduction of coaches, and the same could be accomplished with hockey. The game was a revelation. The chairman (Mr N. J. Ellison): Wc saw it played as we never imagined it could be played. Mr Aitehison: And as tho Indians played it we would have no need for an insurance fund. The speaker added that New Zealand was playing the game on the wrong lines and would never improve until a coach was secured. There was no reason why New Zealand should 2iot play the game in the same way as the Indian team did —super hockey. Mr W. H. Wilson, in supporting the idea, said Manawatu had had a rude awakening.

Mr Aitehison: Even the ardent supporters of Kugby now admit hockey is equally as fascinating as Bugby Wiien played as the Indians played it. “We are playing the wrong type of hockey and played as the Indians played 1 it, the public would flock to see it.’ Mr Aitehison moved that a special committee comprising the chairman, himself and Messrs Wilson and Fitzgerald, bo set up to formulate a scheme for improving the game. This was approved unanimously.
