More Foolish Than It Was Criminal
REMOVAL OF SOME TOOLS Stating that the offence committed by accused had been more of a foolish nature than of criminal intent, Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., suppressed the name of a young man, aged 25 years, when ho appeared in the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North charged with the theft from the Berry Engineering Works, on or about January last and divers dates between that and May 20, of a blow-damp, hammer, two emery wheels and sundry tools of a total value of £O. Mr Ongley appeared for accused, who pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt, with summarily. Detective E. Barling explained that accused had been employed at the works and, after he had left his position there, tho tools had been missed. Accused, when seen by the police had admitted theft and the tools had been recovered. Ho had given no trouble to the police. Counsel said that accused had been 11 years with the firm and had been in (he habit of taking work homo. W.hen ho had moved into his own workshop he had taken some of the tools witli him. Mr Ongley asked for the suppression of accused’s mime, this being granted. The Magistrate convicted and ordered him to come up for sentence if called upon withn 12 months.
